Matsatsa broke his own NCAA Indoor Track & Field 1000m record with a time of 2:16.84 at the Nittany Lion Challenge on Jan. 18.
BIG EAST Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
Kimberley May, Providence, Sr.
At the UMass Flagship Invitational on Jan. 12, May won the women’s mile in a time of 4:28.33, which is the second-fastest collegiate time run this season. She defeated 23 other runners to earn the victory.
BIG EAST Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
Jaiden Gary, DePaul, Fr.
Gary secured a first-place finish in the shot put on Jan. 18 with a throw of 17.18m at the Pat Heenan Invitational. On Jan. 11 he achieved personal records in the weight throw (15.21m) and shot put (18.58m) at the Wisconsin Midwest Invite. The freshman ranks first in the conference for shot put this season.
BIG EAST Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Jaiah Hopf, DePaul, Jr.
The junior broke her own school record, winning the triple jump with a mark of 12.75m at the Wisconsin Midwest Invite. This result put her first in the conference for this event.
Notable Performances
- Providence’s Brett Lehman captured first place in the 400m at the UMass Flagship Invitational on Jan. 12 in a school record time of 48.41. He is tied for second in the conference for this event. He also won the 500m in a time of 1:05.50 at the University of Rhode Island Invitational on Jan. 18.
- Marquette’s Aaron Hughes set a program record in the 200m at 21.58 seconds and ran the second-fastest time in program history in the 60m at 6.81 seconds at the New Balance Collegiate Showdown on Jan. 18.
- Marquette’s Daylee Braden set an indoor program record for the 800m at 2:09.58. She is first in the conference for this event.
- UConn’s Kyle Johnson secured the win in the triple jump (15.54m) at the Battle in Beantown on Jan. 18.
- UConn’s Natalia Surdej won the women’s weight throw with a distance of 18.61m at the Suffolk Relays on Jan. 11. She is ranked first in the conference for this event.
