Laprey Named Senior Associate Commissioner, Media Relations and Strategic Communications

NEW YORK (July 29, 2025) – Mike Laprey, who has served as the chief communications officer for men’s basketball at Boston College for the past eight years, has been named Senior Associate Commissioner, Media Relations and Strategic Communications for the BIG EAST Conference, Commissioner Val Ackerman announced.

Laprey will be primarily responsible for planning and implementing the media and communications activities for the BIG EAST's 22 sports, with a particular emphasis on men’s basketball, as well as leading the conference's strategic communications efforts.
 
“We are very excited to bring Mike full circle from his days as a BIG EAST communications intern to his new role as a member of our senior management team, where his impressive array of communications skills and experiences and his deep knowledge of college basketball will be of immense value to our operation," said BIG EAST Commissioner Val Ackerman.  "We know he'll hit the ground running as we work to reinforce the storylines that have made the BIG EAST one of the most celebrated leagues in the college sports world." 

During his time at Boston College, Laprey has played a key leadership role in the broader external affairs area of the department, while also serving as the departmental liaison with the university on various communications and crisis management matters. Laprey has played a key leadership role in growing BC Athletics’ digital and social media efforts which have resulted in significant gains in exposure and engagement. He has also served as media coordinator for a number of NCAA events, including the NCAA Men’s Basketball East Regionals and the Indoor Track and Field Championships, as well as several ACC championships.
 
Prior to his time at BC, Laprey was the Associate Athletics Director for Communications and New Media at the University of Rhode Island. Early in his career, Laprey also worked at Iona College, ultimately moving up to Associate AD. During his time at Iona, he led communications, served as sport administrator for a number of sports, and was also an assistant coach in cross country and track. 
 
Growing up in Providence, Laprey also served as an intern at the BIG EAST Conference early in his career, and worked at Marquette during their first year in the conference. Laprey earned his undergraduate degree at Fairfield University, and graduate degrees at both Iona and Boston College. 

Laprey’s appointment will be effective August 25.
