Three Teams Cap Off BIG EAST Field Hockey Weekly Honors

BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Lucia Magro, Temple, So., M

Magro powered Temple’s offense in its 4-3 shootout victory over Providence on Friday, recording three points on one goal and one assist.  The sophomore opened the scoring with her team-leading eighth goal of the season at the 12:57 mark of the second quarter, then assisted on Kathryn Gauvin’s tally just 1:10 later to give the Owls a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.  Magro also converted Temple’s opening shootout attempt, helping set the tone as the Owls went on to secure their second shootout victory in their last three games. Across Temple’s two games over the weekend, Magro totaled three points, four shots and three shots on goal, with all three points coming against Providence.  Her performance helped the Owls close their home and BIG EAST regular-season schedule with a win.

BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Serena Langendoen, Old Dominion, Jr., D

Langendoen played a key role in Old Dominion’s 3-2 victory over Georgetown, helping the Monarchs clinch the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST Championship.  Langendoen contributed on both ends of the field, assisting on Madison Zalewski’s opening goal off a penalty corner in the first quarter before scoring the game-winning goal early in the fourth quarter. She finished with three points on one goal and one assist, and six shots, including two on goal. Defensively, Langendoen and the Monarchs limited Georgetown to 10 shots on the day.  She finished the regular season leading the BIG EAST in shots (86), shots on goal (45), goals (17), points (40), and game-winning goals (6).  At the national level, Langendoen ranks seventh in both goals per game and points per game.

BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Lucy Zich, UConn, Fr., F

Zich contributed a goal in UConn’s 3-1 victory over Fairfield on Friday, helping the Huskies close out the regular season undefeated at home.  The freshman forward found the back of the cage at the 53:13 mark of the fourth quarter, extending UConn’s lead to 3-1 and helping secure the victory.  Zich finished with three shots on goal, adding to the Huskies’ offensive pressure in a game where they outshot Fairfield 16-5.  She finished the regular season ranking third in the BIG EAST in shots and shots on goal, and second in both goals and points.  Zich looks to carry that momentum into postseason play.

BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Milou Heuker, UConn, Jr., D

Heuker recorded two points on one goal in UConn’s 3-1 victory over Fairfield on Friday, putting both of her shots on goal.  She opened the scoring for the Huskies in the second quarter, finding the back of the cage to give UConn a 1-0 advantage to help spark a three-goal performance. Heuker contributed on both ends of the field as the Huskies limited Fairfield to just five shots, all on goal, while holding the visitors scoreless over the final two quarters. Her offensive contribution and defensive presence helped UConn secure the victory and finish the regular season undefeated at home.

Diane Saint Martin, Liberty, So., GK

Saint Martin had a standout regular season finale at Villanova last Friday, making four saves with an .800 save percentage in the No. 13 Lady Flames’ 2-1 win.  She made one save in each quarter, with her biggest stop coming early in the first quarter on a Wildcats penalty stroke attempt from Adie Minnella at the 3:08 mark.  Villanova scored later in the first quarter, making Saint Martin’s earlier penalty stroke save especially important.  She also made a crucial save in the 56th minute to keep Liberty on top.

Josefina Tomasi, Liberty, Jr., F

Tomasi recorded two points on one goal in Liberty’s 2-1 road victory over Villanova in Friday’s regular-season finale.  With the Lady Flames trailing 1-0 early in the third quarter, the junior forward delivered a beautiful reverse shot into the top-left corner of the cage at the 33:45 mark to even the score at 1-1.  The goal marked Tomasi’s ninth of the season through 17 games, tying for the second-most on the team and fifth-most in the BIG EAST. She also ranks second on the squad with 22 points and continues to be a key offensive contributor for the Lady Flames heading into postseason play.

Alex Lepore, Temple, Jr., GK

Lepore delivered an outstanding finish to her junior season, recording 20 saves across two starts while facing 28 shots on goal.  She was instrumental in the Owls’ 4-3 shootout victory over Providence on Friday, making eight saves through regulation and overtime before turning away Providence’s final three shootout attempts to secure the win.  Lepore came up particularly big in the fourth quarter, recording four saves to help Temple force overtime. She followed with a career-high 12 saves against Penn on Sunday, including 11 in the second half, despite the 2-0 setback.  Her career-high performance capped off a strong final weekend, as she finished first in the BIG EAST in total saves (93) and averaged 5.17 saves per game.

Ava Borkowski, Villanova, Gr., F

Borkowski recorded two points on one goal in Villanova’s 2-1 loss against No. 13 Liberty on Friday, putting both of her shots on goal for a perfect 1.000 shot-on-goal percentage.  The graduate student netted her 12th goal of the season late in the first quarter after Erin Mitchell drove hard and found Borkowski cutting toward the goal.  Her goal pushed her season point total to 26 and played a pivotal role in helping Villanova secure a spot in the BIG EAST Championship for the second consecutive season.  Borkowski leads the Wildcats in both goals and assists while ranking third in the BIG EAST in points and tied for second in goals.  She will look to carry that momentum into the postseason after scoring in Villanova’s first-round matchup a year ago.
