Tuscaloosa, Ala. – In game one of the NCAA Super Regional, St. John’s dropped an 8-0 contest to No. 7 seed and host Alabama.
After a scoreless opening inning, Alabama struck first in the bottom of the second inning, when a double by Brennan Holt drove in two Crimson Tide runners for a 2-0 lead.
The Crimson Tide extended its lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs. Two runners crossed the plate on bases-loaded walks, while Bryce Fowler added a two-run double.
St. John’s sophomore right-hander Tyler Longoria entered in relief to end the fourth inning, retiring both batters he faced with a strikeout and a popout to center field.
Longoria kept it rolling in the bottom of the fifth and sixth, retiring six of the next seven batters to hold the Crimson Tide scoreless through the pair of innings. Overall, he pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three batters.
Offensively for the Red Storm, redshirt sophomore catcher Adam Agresti reached base in all three of his four at-bats, earning a pair of walks and lining a double to right-field.
Alabama and St. John’s will return to Sewell-Thomas Stadium on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT on ESPN2. The Red Storm is looking to avoid elimination in the best-of-three series and force a decisive third game on Monday at a time to be determined.
