No. 4/5 Georgetown Defeats No. 23/20 High Point, 5-1

WASHINGTON – The No. 4/5 Georgetown University men's soccer team defeated the No. 23/20 High Point University Panthers in a high-scoring 5-1 affair on Friday evening at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 5-1-1 on the year, while the Panthers drop to 2-3-1 for the season.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "Today was nice because we got setpiece goals, which we've been trying to hone in on. To be honest, I thought High Point was better than us in the first half. I think the scoreline was a little bit flattering for us. But you nip a goal on a corner, and then suddenly that shifts them onto their back foot. Then we got another couple setpiece goals and that was for us a real big point of emphasis we tried to get in, so that was really good to see that happen today."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas struck early on a corner kick in the seventh minute when senior Mateo Ponce Ocampo served in a ball to junior Tate Lampman. The defender's shot was saved, but the rebound fell to junior Aidan Godinho who sent it back in to make it 1-0.
  • GU added another in the 31st minute to put the Hoyas up 2-0. Senior Matthew Van Horn served a ball to junior Mitchell Baker. The keeper got a hand on it, but Baker also made contact and willed it in.
  • The 2-0 lead would stand at the break.
  • Just three minutes into the second half, the Blue & Gray put one more into the back of the net on a volley by senior Eric Howard after sophomore Casey Milliken's shot was blocked.
  • The Hoyas would continue to push and increased the advantage to 4-0 in the 53rd minute. Junior David Urrutia passed it to classmate Jack Brown at the top corner of the box. He served the ball in and Lampman rose above to direct it in.
  • The Panthers finally had an answer in the 62nd minute off of a free kick just outside the box.
  • Lampman couldn't be stopped and he scored the brace in the 77th minute when Van Horn served in a corner and Lampman headed it in again to make it 5-1 which would stand as the final.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot High Point, 17-16, and had 11 shots on goal to the Panthers' three.
  • The Hoyas managed seven corners in the game, and HPU tallied eight.
  • Junior Charlie DeMarco played all 90 minutes with two saves to his credit.
  • This marked GU's fifth ranked opponent on the year.
  • Godinho's goal was his first of the season.
  • With two goals and an assist, this was Lampman's first-career multi-goal match.
