Attack Player of the Week
Matt Grillo, Providence, So., A (Setauket, N.Y.)
Providence sophomore Matt Grillo earns BIG EAST Attack Player of the Week after a seven-point game against Sacred Heart. Grillo scored nearly half of the Friars goals with six, while also adding an assist. He bolstered his stat line with a ground ball and a caused turnover. He assisted the second goal of the tie, which tied the game at 1-1. From there he scored Providence’s fifth, sixth, ninth, 12th and 13th goals. He took eight total shots for a shot percentage of .750.
Midfielder of the Week
Mike Madsen, St. John’s, Sr., M (Locust Valley, N.Y.)
St. John’s senior Mike Madsen recorded his third seven-point performance of the 2020 campaign to help St. John’s earn a 16-9 win over Siena on Saturday. Madsen netted a career best six goals and one assist. He leads the Red Storm in scoring with 23 goals (26 points). Madsen’s first two goal helped cut Siena’s lead in half as he helped St. John’s come back from a 5-1 deficit, scoring the second and third goals of the match. He scored the go-ahead goal with 1:21 left in the half, capitalizing on a man-up situation, 7-6. He also scored the 11th, 12th and final goal of the win.
Defensive Player of the Week
Owen McElroy, Georgetown, Jr., G (Ridgewood, N.J.)
Georgetown goalie Owen McElroy led the Hoyas to a 16-4 victory at Towson on Saturday. McElroy allowed just four goals with nine saves for a .692 save percentage. McElroy and the Georgetown defense held Towson scoreless for the first 13:53 of the game and held the Tigers scoreless for another 23:06 between the second and third quarters. Georgetown’s defense has held opponents to four goals or fewer in three games this season. McElroy also picked up three ground balls in the win.
Freshman of the Week
Alec Stathakis, Denver, Fr., FOS (Northville, Mich.)
Denver freshman Alec Stathakis won 22 faceoffs against No. 10 Notre Dame on Saturday in a 14-11 victory for the Pioneers. Stathakis had a .787 faceoff percentage as he helped keep possession to fuel Denver’s 7-0 run that included five goals in 3:12 to start scoring in the second half. Stathakis’ stat line included 15 ground balls. It was Stathakis’ first game with 20 plus faceoff wins.
Honor Roll
Ethan Walker, Denver, Sr., A
Walker had four goals in seven shots in the 14-11 win over No. 10 Notre Dame. He finished with six points and is currently No. 3 on Denver’s career point list. Walker scored the fourth quarter goal that put a stop to Notre Dame’s 5-0 run.
Toby Burgdorf, Providence, Jr., G
Burgdorf earned his third win between the pipes this season with his second straight 16-save performance. Burgdorf posted a .667 save percentage in a 14-8 win at Sacred Heart.
Patrick Kennedy, Villanova, RS-Jr., D
Kennedy had a career high weekend as the Wildcats went 1-1 at the Philly Lacrosse Classic. The Wildcats defeated No. 9 Penn, 12-10. Helped by Kennedy’s defensive performance with five ground balls and four caused turnovers. VU lost 15-12 to Drexel on Sunday, but Kennedy had a career best nine ground balls and caused one turnover.
