Five BIG EAST Teams Earn NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship Invites

BIG EAST earns most bids since 2010 as at-large teams Butler, Providence, St. John’s and Xavier join automatic qualifier Georgetown in the field.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. –
Five BIG EAST women’s soccer teams heard their names called on Monday afternoon during the 2021 NCAA Championship Selection Show as Georgetown, which earned the league’s automatic bid, was joined in the field by at-large selections Butler, Providence, St. John’s and Xavier. The five selections are the most for the BIG EAST since 2010 when the conference received six invites.
 
NCAA Championship First Round matches are scheduled for Nov. 12-14 at campus sites. Specific dates and times will be announced shortly. Second and Third Rounds will be conducted at eight non-predetermined campus sites on Nov. 19 and 21. Quarterfinals are slated for Nov. 26-27 at four non-predetermined campus sites. The 2021 Women’s College Cup will be held at Stevens Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. Two, two-team single-elimination Semifinals games will be held at 7:00 PM (EST) and 9:30 PM (EST) on December 3, 2021. The two winning teams in the semifinals will advance and compete in the single-elimination National Championship game which will take place December 5, 2021, 8:00 PM (EST).
 
Fresh off its fifth BIG EAST Championship crown, Georgetown (13-1-6) earned a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Championship and will host Central Connecticut State University in the First Round. The Hoyas earned an NCAA bid for the 10th straight year and 12th time overall.
 
BIG EAST regular-season champion Xavier (16-2-1) will host Milwaukee in the First Round. The Musketeers earned an NCAA bid for the second time in three seasons and fourth time overall. It marks Xavier’s first at-large selection and first time it will host an NCAA Tournament game.
 
Making its first BIG EAST title game appearance since 1994, St. John’s (12-6-2) earned an at-large berth for the fourth time and first since 2015. The Red Storm, who finished runner-up in the BIG EAST Championship, will travel to Brown for their first-round match.
 
After taking Georgetown down to the wire in the BIG EAST Semifinals, Butler (15-4-1) earned an NCAA Championship bid for the third time and first since 2017. The at-large selection is their second in program history. The Bulldogs will travel to Wisconsin for their first-round match.
 
Providence (10-6-3) is headed to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 1993. The Friars are making their second national postseason appearance and will travel to Hofstra for their first-round match.
 
The BIG EAST’s five selections rank fourth among Division I conferences this fall. The ACC led with nine teams invited, followed by the SEC with seven and the Big Ten with six. Following the BIG EAST was the Pac-12 with four, the Ivy League, American Athletic and West Coast Conference with three apiece and the Big 12 with two.
 
The BIG EAST has earned five or more NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship berths on seven previous occasions, with more than half (four) of those coming when the conference featured 16 teams. Five of 11 BIG EAST schools receiving NCAA berths is the second-highest percentage in league history after eight of 14 BIG EAST schools received bids in 2001.
