Creighton Advances to NCAA Volleyball Round of 32

Marquette eliminated in First Round by Dayton; Butler bows out of NIVC

NEW YORK  –  Creighton advanced to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament after defeating Ole Miss 3-0 on Thursday night. The Bluejays will face Kansas on Friday night at 8 p.m. ET with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line.

On the flip side, both Marquette and Butler saw their postseasons come to an end. The Golden Eagles were handed a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Dayton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, while Butler dropped its opening round match in the NIVC to Valparaiso by a score of 3-0.

UConn is still on deck to play its first round match in the NIVC, as they get started on Saturday night at 7 p.m. against North Carolina A&T.

Creighton 3, Ole Miss 0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-13)
The Bluejays were in control for much of this one. After going wire-to-wire to win set one, Creighton used a 9-2 run late in set two to go up 2-0 in the match. The third set was much of the same, as Creighton once again held the lead for the entire set as they wrapped up the victory. Both of the Bluejays’ star freshmen had double-doubles, as BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Norah Sis tallied 16 kills and 10 digs. Kendra Wait collected 31 assists and 14 digs. Creighton will match up with Kansas on Friday night with the winner advancing to the Sweet 16. The Bluejays are looking to return to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2016, a year in which they defeated Kansas in the second round to reach that point.

Dayton 3, Marquette 1 (20-25, 21-25, 26-24, 23-25)
Marquette fought hard late after facing a 2-0 deficit, but could not rally back and fell in four sets to Dayton. BIG EAST Co-Player of the Year Taylor Wolf picked up her eighth triple-double of the season. The graduate finished with 10 kills, 20 assists and 15 digs in the defeat. Two other Golden Eagles also registered double-digit kills, as Savannah Rennie had a team-high 14 while freshman Jenna Reitsma finished with 11. Marquette finished the 2021 season with a record of 26-6.

Valparaiso 3, Butler 0 (23-25, 17-25, 16-25)
Butler fell in the first round of the NIVC Tournament to Valparaiso by a score of 3-0 on Thursday night. BIG EAST Libero of the Year Jaymeson Kinley tallied 15 digs on the night, while Marissa McKelvey recorded a match-high 24 assists. Melody Davidson had five blocks to go along with five kills, and Mariah Grunze tied Megan Sheridan for the team-high in kills with seven. Butler wraps up the 2021 season with an overall record of 16-16.
