Marquette won at No. 11 Villanova, No. 20 Xavier survived at DePaul and Creighton knocked off St. John’s on a wild Wednesday in BIG EAST play.
Marquette scored the game’s final seven points in a 57-54 win over Villanova. The victory ended the Wildcats’ 29-game winning streak in Finneran Pavilion. Justin Lewis connected on a 3-pointer with 11.9 seconds left to give the Golden Eagles (13-6, 5-3 BIG EAST) the victory and extend their winning streak to five games. The Wildcats (13-4, 6-2 BE), who had a six-game winning streak end, were led by Eric Dixon’s 15 points.
Xavier’s Jack Nunge made a free throw with 1:15 remaining that was the final point in a 68-67 victory at DePaul. Nunge finished with 23 points and six rebounds and Colby Jones added 13 points for the Musketeers (14-3, 4-2 BE). The Blue Demons (10-7, 1-6 BE), who played without injured Javon Freeman-Liberty, were led by David Jones’ 26 points. DePaul led 50-40 in the second half before Xavier rallied.
Creighton opened its game against visiting St. John’s with a 20-7 spurt and rolled to an 87-64 win. The Bluejays (11-5, 3-2 BE) made a season-high 14 3-pointers in 27 attempts. Alex O’Connell scored a career-high 28 points. Freshman Arthur Kaluma added 20 points, also a career high. Creighton enjoyed a 50-31 rebounding edge against the Johnnies (10-6, 2-3 BE), who were led by Julian Champagnie’s 17 points and Aaron Wheeler’s 16 points and six rebounds.
Thursday’s schedule shows Georgetown playing at Providence with an early 5 p.m. ET tipoff. The game will be the Friars’ first since Jan. 8. Connecticut plays at Butler at 9 p.m., also on FS1. The Huskies beat the Bulldogs 76-59 on Tuesday in Hartford in a rescheduled game.
