WSOC Notes - BIG EAST Championship First Round

NEW YORK –
Connecticut clinched the final spot in the 2022 BIG EAST Women's Soccer Championship Presented by Jeep on Thursday. UConn will be the No. 6 seed, joining No. 1 seed Georgetown, No. 2 Xavier, No. 3 St. John's, No. 4 Butler and No. 5 Creighton. The Huskies posted a commanding 4-0 victory over Seton Hall to secure their spot in the postseason.

First-round play kicks off on Sunday when the Red Storm will host UConn and the Bulldogs will host the Bluejays. Both matches will start at 1 p.m. ET and can be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports.

The winners of Sunday's first-round matches will advance to the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 4. No. 2 seed Xavier will host the winner of St. John's-UConn in the first semifinal match of the day at 4 p.m., while top-seeded Georgetown will play the winner of Butler-Creighton in the second match of the day at 6:30 p.m. The BIG EAST Championship semifinals will also stream on BEDN on FloSports.

The semifinal winners will advance to the title match on Sunday, Nov. 6. Sunday's match will begin at 1:30 p.m. and will air on FS1. The semifinals and final will be played at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md. The winner of the BIG EAST Championship receives the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

Regular-season champion and 15th-ranked Georgetown (12-1-5, 8-0-2 BIG EAST) and No. 24 Xavier (12-2-5, 6-0-4) were the only teams that knew their seeds going into Thursday night. St. John's (7-4-6, 4-2-3) clinched the No. 3 seed after Butler (7-7-4, 4-3-3) and Creighton (8-3-7, 4-3-3) tied in its regular season finale. Even though the Bulldogs and Bluejays remain tied in both points and win percentage, Butler earns the No. 4 seed through the tiebreaking process with most points earned against the top-seed, leaving Creighton as the fifth seed. With UConn's (8-6-3, 4-4-2) win and a Marquette (7-7-4, 3-4-3) draw against Xavier, the Huskies clinched the final spot after a closely contested race with the Golden Eagles.

No. 1 seed Georgetown is the reigning BIG EAST champion, winning its fifth title in the last six seasons last fall. The 15th-ranked Hoyas are making their 20th appearance in the BIG EAST Championship, along with being this season's regular-season champion. No. 2 seed Xavier is making its fifth appearance after being the top seed and regular-season champion last season. The Musketeers won the BIG EAST Championship title back in 2019. No. 3 seed St. John's returns to the postseason after a title match run last season, upsetting 2021 regular-season champion Xavier. The Red Strom look to get back to the title match and earn their second conference tournament title in 17 tournament appearances. No. 4 seed Butler makes its ninth BIG EAST Championship appearance and looks to win its first conference title since 2015. The fifth-seeded Bluejays are back in the conference tournament for the second time in program history. Creighton's first and last appearance was in the Spring 2021 season where they were eliminated by Georgetown as the No. 2 seed of the Midwest division. Lastly, the No. 6 seed Huskies return to the BIG EAST Championship for the second straight year. This will be UConn's 22nd appearance in the conference tournament, which is a league record.
