St. John’s picked up a road win, while Connecticut and Marquette registered homecourt victories on Wednesday night.
St. John’s won its third straight BIG EAST road game, knocking off Xavier 86-73 at Cintas Center. The Johnnies (14-11, 6-8 BIG EAST) outscored the Musketeers (17-8, 7-7 BE) 30-16 in the final 10 minutes of the contest. St. John’s Julian Champagnie notched a game-high 27 points and added five assists and three steals. Tareq Coburn came off the bench to add 13 points. Xavier got 22 points and seven rebounds from Jack Nunge. Paul Scruggs finished with 16 points and five assists.
No. 24 UConn beat Seton Hall 70-65 at Gampel Pavilion on the broad shoulders of Adama Sanogo. The sophomore forward sparked the Huskies (18-7, 9-5 BE) with 20 points, 16 rebounds and three blocked shots. Tyrese Martin and R.J. Cole each added 16 points. UConn led 28-27 at the break before starting the second half with an 11-4 spurt. The Pirates (15-9, 6-8 BE) were led by Jamir Harris and Jared Rhoden, who had 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Marquette freshman Kam Jones scored 17 of his game-high 19 points in the first half when the Golden Eagles took control of the game and recorded a 77-66 victory against visiting Georgetown. Kur Kuath made all seven of his field goal attempts and finished with 15 points. He also blocked three shots. Marquette (17-9, 9-6 BE) put together a 48-31 lead by halftime. Collin Holloway paced four Hoyas (6-19, 0-14 BE) in double figures with 15 points. Aminu Mohammed made only 3-of-19 shots from the field, but finished with 13 points and 17 rebounds.
The lone game on Thursday’s slate is a rescheduled contest – Creighton at DePaul at 10 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network. The Bluejays (16-8, 8-5 BE) have won three in a row. The Blue Demons (12-12, 3-11 BE) have lost two straight, in overtime at Providence and by two points against Butler on Tuesday.
