MBB Minute – Marquette, Xavier Complete Two-Game Sweeps

On Wednesday, Marquette defeated Villanova for the second time in two weeks and Xavier subdued a late rally to complete a sweep of Butler.

No. 24 Marquette jumped out to an early lead and never trailed in an 83-73 victory against No. 12 Villanova at Fiserv Forum. The Golden Eagles (16-7, 8-4 BIG EAST) led 46-32 at halftime before the Wildcats (16-6, 9-3 BE) chopped the deficit to 56-53. Marquette’s Darryl Morsell scored the game’s next eight points to help MU regain a comfortable advantage. Morsell finished with 15 points. Justin Lewis scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Brandon Slater led Villanova with 18 points.

No. 21 Xavier led 49-34 midway through the second half before staving off Butler’s comeback attempt at Cintas Center. The Musketeers’ Zach Freemantle scored 16 of his game-high 23 points in the second half. He shot 9-of-13 from the field. Xavier (16-5, 6-4 BE) plays three of its next four games at home. The Bulldogs (11-11, 4-7 BE), who had won two straight, got 18-point efforts from guards Chuck Harris and Jayden Taylor.

The only game on Thursday’s calendar is a rescheduled matchup between St. John’s and Georgetown at 6 p.m. ET on FS1. The Johnnies won the first meeting 88-69 at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 16, but have defeated the Hoyas only once on the road since 2003-04.
