In Tuesday’s action, Villanova held off a furious late rally by St. John’s, Connecticut earned an eight-point win against Marquette and Creighton edged Butler in a game that had 14 lead changes.
No. 15 Villanova survived a 23-6 rally in the final minutes to defeat St. John’s 75-69 at Madison Square Garden. The Wildcats (18-6, 11-3 BIG EAST) led 66-46 with 4:27 to play before the Johnnies (13-10, 5-7 BE) went on a 23-6 run. A missed a 3-pointer with 13 seconds remaining would have tied the game. Eric Dixon led Villanova with 16 points and seven rebounds. Justin Moore added 16 points. St. John’s, playing without injured Posh Alexander, was led by Aaron Wheeler’s career-high 31 points. He shot 6-of-10 from 3-point range and grabbed seven boards.
No. 24 UConn used a 46-27 rebounding edge in its 80-72 win against No. 18 Marquette in Hartford. When the Golden Eagles rallied to cut the Husky lead to 53-52, the Huskies (16-6, 7-4 BE) put together a 10-0 run to secure the win. Adama Sanogo tallied a game-high 24 points with Tyrese Martin adding 18. Both players pulled down 15 rebounds. Olivier-Maxence Prosper scored 18 points with Greg Elliott and Justin Lewis each adding 17 points for Marquette (16-8, 8-5 BE).
In a low-scoring affair that had both teams shoot 4-of-17 from 3-point range, Creighton prevailed 54-52 over Butler. Ryan Nembhard’s driving layup with 32 seconds left gave the Bluejays (14-8, 6-5 BE) a 53-52 lead. A defensive stop on the final possession clinched the win. Arthur Kaluma scored a game-high 16 points and Ryan Hawkins added 15. Jayden Taylor had 13 points for the Bulldogs (11-13, 4-9 BE). Butler’s last three losses are by three points or less.
