BIG EAST Player of the Week
Kevin Michaels, St. John’s, RSo., IF (Encinitas, Calif.)
Kevin Michaels led the Johnnies to a 3-1 week and a series sweep of Sacred Heart with a nearly perfect weekend at the plate. In a trio of games against the Pioneers, Michaels hit .857 (12-for-14). For the week, he drove in 13 runs, scored seven times, registered three homers, was 13-for-18 (.722) at the plate and slugged at a 1.500 clip. In the opening game of the weekend series, he batted 4-for-5 with a double, two home runs and six RBI. The next day, he batted 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. In the series finale he became the first St. John’s baseball player to hit for the cycle since Ryan Mahoney in 2007, going a perfect 5-for-5 with five RBI.
BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week
Ian Cooke, UConn, Fr., RHP (New Milford, Conn.)
Earning the start in a midweek contest against a then-top-25 foe, Ian Cooke pitched 7.2 scoreless innings in the Huskies 7-1 triumph over No. 25 Southern California. Punishing the Trojans offense, Cooke struck out seven batters and limited USC to a 0.143 batting average. Overall, the freshman collected his third win as a collegian improving to 3-0 in 2022.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Cade Lommel, Creighton, So., LHP (Delano, Minn.)
Lommel threw 5.2 scoreless innings of relief on Sunday after entering the game with one out in the bottom of the first inning and Creighton trailing 2-0 to Minnesota. The sophomore southpaw allowed just four hits and one walk in the longest outing of his season, striking out three, after entering the day with a 17.05 ERA in 6.1 innings. Lommel’s work was crucial to a bullpen that threw 8.2 scoreless innings in CU’s 4-2 victory.
Andrew Meggs, Creighton, Jr., IF (San Jose, Calif.)
Meggs hit .581 in Creighton’s weekend sweep of Minnesota, going 8-for-14 with three runs and three RBI. He also walked twice and owned an on-base percentage of .625. His weekend started when he went 3-for-3 with a pair of walks in Friday’s 5-4 win vs. Minnesota. He also had eight assists, tying a Creighton record for a game at Charles Schwab Field Omaha. Meggs singled to start the bottom of the ninth inning and later scored the game-winning run as the Bluejays walked off the Golden Gophers.
Andrew Williams, Georgetown, Fr., LHP (Atlanta, Ga.)
In just his third career start, Williams took a no-hitter into the eighth inning on Friday evening against Mount St. Mary's. In his seven-plus frames of work, he struck out seven batters on 99 pitches and allowed just one run on one hit to pick up his first collegiate win.
Tyler DeMartino, Xavier, Jr., OF/DH (Potomac, Md.)
DeMartino led Xavier’s starters with a .500 average (8-16) in a 3-2 week for the Musketeers, including taking 3 of 4 from Indiana. Three of DeMartino’s hits were for extra bases, capping the week with a .812 slugging percentage. DeMartino came around to score a team-high seven runs during Xavier’s five game week and drove in four RBI, including three in Sunday’s series finale.
Trevor Olson, Xavier, Gr., LHP (Chippewa Falls, Wisc.)
Olson made the start in Saturday’s game at Indiana, going 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit overall and throwing a no hitter through 4.1 innings. Olson struck out six and gave up three walks in a game that Xavier led 12-0 when he went to the bullpen, ultimately winning the contest 12-10.
