NEW YORK – On the eve of the 2022 BIG EAST Baseball Championship Presented by JEEP, the conference announced the regular-season awards and all-conference teams. A pair of first basemen, Xavier’s
Luke Franzoni and Creighton’s
Alan Roden shared BIG EAST Player of the Year honors, while Creighton junior righty
Dylan Tebrake earned Pitcher of the Year for the second consecutive season. Georgetown rounded out the major awards, as
Owen Carapellotti was unanimously selected as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and Hoya head coach
Edwin Thompson and his crew were selected as the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year.
Along with the four major regular-season awards, the conference announced the 2021 All-Conference First and Second Teams, preceding the BIG EAST Championship, which will take place at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio from May 26-29.
The league’s tournament teams: Connecticut, Creighton, Georgetown and Xavier, made up 21 of the 28 all-conference selections, including 12 out of 14 members on the All-BIG EAST First Team.
UConn, the regular season champion and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming tournament, had a league-high eight total all-conference selections, with five on the first team. No. 2 seed Creighton and No. 3 seed Xavier tied for second most with five total selections.
The 14-member first team was made up of four starting pitchers, a reliever, each infield position, three outfielders, a catcher and a designated hitter. Five of the first team honorees were unanimous selections, including a trio of pitchers. The second team was based on a non-positional vote.
Voting for the All-BIG EAST Team and major awards was conducted by the league's eight head coaches who could not cast a ballot for their own players.
Franzoni shared the BIG EAST’s top individual honor after a productive campaign for No. 3 seed Xavier. The senior first baseman batted .405 in 21 league games and 79 at bats, while leading the league with 10 home runs. Franzoni also ranked second in RBI with 26, to go along with 21 runs scored. Over the course of a 54-game season, Franzoni produced a league high 62 RBI, in addition to 57 runs scored. Batting .355 (70-for-197), he posted a .782 slugging percentage and .486 on base percentage, while sending a league-high 24 balls out of the park. Out on the grass, he was credited with 159 putouts and 10 assists in 172 chances for a .983 fielding percentage.
A year removed from winning Freshman of the Year, Roden earned his second conference major award in as many seasons. The sophomore first baseman led all BIG EAST hitters, with more than 100 at bats, with a .394 batting average, garnering 71 hits with 180 at bats. In addition, he led the league with a .502 on base percentage to go with a .667 slugging percentage in 46 games. Roden scored 46 runs and 42 RBI, with four home runs. In 20 league games, he led all batters with over 50 at bats, with a .417 batting average (35-of-84) to go along with 24 runs, 15 doubles, three home runs, 25 RBI, a .702 slugging percentage and .490 on base percentage.
After becoming the second Creighton pitcher to earn Pitcher of the Year honors in 2021, Tebrake repeated as BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year in 2022. The junior led the conference in BIG EAST only wins, going 5-1 from the mound over the course of seven conference starts. Tebrake powered the Bluejays with a 2.66 ERA boasting a league-high 65 strikeouts to just 11 walks. Tebrake, from Cold Spring, Minn., pitched to a 2.68 ERA in 15 starts overall, boasting an 8-2 record over 87.1 innings pitched, allowing 67 hits, 31 runs, with 108 strikeouts. It marks the third straight year a Creighton pitcher has received the award.
Catcher Carapellotti earned Freshman of the Year, leading all BIG EAST catchers in batting over 19 league games with a .314 batting average (22-for-70). Overall, he batted .285 (45-for-158) with eight home runs, 17 doubles, 26 runs, 22 RBI and 22 walks earned on the year. Behind the plate, he registered 263 putouts and 20 assists for a .986 fielding percentage. He was also credited with six double plays.
In just his second season at the helm for the Georgetown Hoyas, Edwin Thompson and his staff led the Hoyas back to the BIG EAST Championship for the first time since 2018 and just the fifth appearance overall in program history. Georgetown, who finished 2021 in eighth with a 6-19 conference record and in December picked to finish seventh by the league’s head coaches, rebounded with an 11-10 mark to garner the fourth seed in the BIG EAST Tournament. The Hoyas finished the regular season 32-22, setting multiple program records including the most team wins in a season and most home runs (95) in a season.
