MASON, Ohio – In the final game of Saturday’s tripleheader, the No. 3 seed Xavier Musketeers carried momentum from their morning victory with another dazzling offensive display at the 2022 BIG EAST Championship presented by Jeep at Prasco Park.
Xavier hit their way back into the title game, taking down No. 2 seed Creighton, 27-8, setting up a matchup against the No. 1 seed UConn Huskies Sunday at Noon ET. The contest marks the second consecutive meeting between the pair of programs in the BIG EAST Championship game.
It was a historic afternoon for the Musketeers who rattled home 43 runs in a pair of contests, the most by a team in back-to-back games in the BIG EAST Championship. In addition, the 27 runs scored against the Bluejays set a new BIG EAST Championship record for tallies in a game, topping the 21 scored by Seton Hall in 2018.
Individually, Co-BIG EAST Player of the Year Luke Franzoni put on a show in front of the Prasco Park crowd, smashing a BIG EAST Championship record three balls out of the yard, including a pair of grand slams. With 11 RBI in the outing, he surpassed the previous mark of seven set by David Vilches of Creighton in 2019.
Overall, in three games Franzoni has hammered four home runs and has tallied a BIG EAST Tournament record 14 RBI. As a team, the Musketeers sent seven ball over the wall to set a BIG EAST Championship record in a game, with the 13 home runs in three games breaking the previous record of 10 set by Louisville in 2009.
Right back to where he left off against the Hoyas early Saturday morning, Jack Housinger got the Musketeers out to an early lead with a solo shot to right field, his third home run of the day. After Andrew Walker singled to left center allowing Tyler Demartino to cross home plate, Xavier entered the bottom of the first with a 2-0 lead it would not look back on.
The Musketeers later opened the game up in the top of the third with eight runs on the way to the historic night.
Xavier enters Sunday’s contest looking to capture the fourth BIG EAST Championship in program history, while UConn will look to capture the fifth BIG EAST title in program history.
Game six will broadcast live on FS2 at Noon. If necessary, game seven is scheduled to begin no earlier than 4 p.m. on Sunday.
