MASON, Ohio – In the first semifinal contest of the 2022 BIG EAST Baseball Championship presented by Jeep, top-seed Connecticut stamped its place in the BIG EAST title game with a, 7-1, win over No. 2 seed Creighton Saturday afternoon at Prasco Park.
For the second straight season the Huskies are set to return to the title game, and are set to play the winner of Saturday’s late game between Creighton and No. 3 seed Xavier Sunday at Noon ET. If necessary, a rubber match is slated for 4 p.m. Both Championship games will be broadcast live on FS2.
On the mound for UConn, freshman Pat Gallagher shined under the Prasco Park lights with just three hits allowed and six strikeouts, with one run allowed in 7.0 innings. Closing out the game, Devin Kirby pitched a pair of scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two batters.
With the game even at 1-1, UConn’s designate hitter Korey Morton broke open the game with a three-run shot to left center field in the bottom of the third. Three innings later, Morton once again sent a rocket, this time to left field, for his second of the game to give UConn a commanding, 5-1, lead.
Overall, Morton led the way with a 3-for-4 batting performance, scoring twice and collecting four RBI. Meanwhile, Casey Dana batted 2-for-3 and earned a walk, while scoring a run for the Huskies.
Leading the Bluejays attack, Andrew Meggs garnered two of Creighton’s four hits in the outing, batting 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double.
