Connecticut Wins College Park Regional, Advances to Second Super Regional

NEW YORK - The Connecticut Huskies (49-14) made history Monday night, defeating No. 15 Maryland, 11-8, to advance to the second Super Regional in program history.

The Huskies set a program record with their 49th win of the year, while advancing out of a Regional Final for the first time since 2011. Also, UConn is the first BIG EAST team to advance to the Super Regionals since Lousville last accomplished the feat in 2013. That season, the Cardinals advanced to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., defeating No. 2 Vanderbilt in the Super Regionals.

Maryland catcher Luke Schigler opened the game with a home run to right center field on just the sixth pitch of the game to give the Terrapins the early 1-0 advantage. Starting pitcher Andrew Johnson later forced back-to-back outs in the bottom of the first to place the Huskies in an early hole.

However, the Huskies gained new life after earning four consecutive walks before T.C. Simmons was hit by reliever Sean Heine's pitch to jump in front 2-1. Stepping up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs, Matt Donlan opened up the game with a grand slam to give the Huskies a 6-1 lead they would not look back on.

Following the game, Donlan earned Most Outstanding Player in the Regional.

On the mound, freshman right-hander Ian Cooke made his first NCAA Tournament appearance and pitched 4.2 solid frames giving up just two earned runs. Ace Austin Peterson came out of the bullpen and earned his 11th victory of the season with 2.1 innings of work.

Up next, UConn will travel to the West Coast to face No. 2 Stanford at Sunken Diamond in Stanford, Calif. The best of three series will begin Saturday, June 11 at 10:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU. Game 2 will air on either ESPNU or ESPN2 Sunday at 7 p.m. An if necessary game 3 is scheduled for June 13, with a time and tv designation decided following the conclusion of Sunday's outing.
