NEW YORK – On the final day of the BIG EAST women's soccer regular season, no teams still in the Championship hunt knew their fate heading into their respective matches on Thursday. The afternoon began with Providence securing first-round hosting rights, before closing out with Butler clinching the final spot in the 2023 BIG EAST Women's Soccer Championship Presented by JEEP.
With a win on Thursday, Xavier secured the No. 1 seed in the tournament and share the BIG EAST Regular Season Title with No. 2 seed Georgetown. The Hoyas previously wrapped up their regular season on Sunday. The Musketeers and Hoyas will earn a first-round bye and will advance to the semifinals at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md.
First-round play kicks off on Sunday when No. 3 seed UConn hosts No. 6 seed Butler, while No. 4 seed Providence will host No. 5 seed St. John's. Both matches will start at 1 p.m. ET and can be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports Presented by Invesco QQQ.
The winners of Sunday's first-round matches will advance to the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 2. Top-seeded Xavier will play the winner of Providence-St. John's in the first semifinal match of the day at 4 p.m., while No. 2 seed Georgetown will host the winner of UConn-Butler in the second match of the day at 6:30 p.m. The BIG EAST Championship semifinals will also stream on BEDN on FloSports.
The semifinal winners will advance to the title match on Sunday, Nov. 5. Sunday's match will begin at 1:30 p.m. and will air on FS1. The semifinals and final will be played at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md. The winner of the BIG EAST Championship receives the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
Early on Thursday, following a win over Marquette (5-10-4, 2-6-2) in its regular season finale, 17th-ranked Xavier (13-2-4, 6-0-4 BIG EAST) clinched a share of the BIG EAST regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST tournament. The Musketeers share their regular season title with RV Georgetown (10-1-7, 6-0-4), who finishes with the No. 2 seed.
UConn (9-3-5, 6-1-3) clinched the No. 3 seed after defeating Seton Hall (6-7-5, 2-4-4), while Providence (9-3-5, 4-1-5) locked up the No. 4 seed following a victory against Villanova (4-7-7, 1-7-2). St. John's (10-5-3, 5-4-1) was able to secure the No. 5 seed following a win over DePaul (6-7-4, 2-5-3), who was eliminated with the result.
The final spot in the Championship Bracket was up for grabs by five teams who had yet to clinch a postseason berth. After a commanding victory against Creighton (4-9-5, 2-7-1) to end the regular season, Butler (6-7-6, 2-3-5) was able to earn the No. 6 seed. The Bulldogs jumped into the conference tournament following Seton Hall and DePaul losing in their respective finales, both of which began the final slate of games above Butler in the standings.
No. 1 seed Xavier was the BIG EAST runner-up last season, making its second BIG EAST title match appearance. The 17
th-ranked Musketeers will be entering the conference tournament for the sixth time after winning a share of the of the BIG EAST regular season title this season. No. 2 seed Georgetown is making their 21st appearance in the BIG EAST Championship after winning a share of the of the BIG EAST regular season title with Xavier. The Hoyas are the defending BIG EAST champions and will look to advance to the BIG EAST title match for the eighth consecutive year.
No. 3 seed UConn returns to the BIG EAST Championship for the third straight year, marking its 23
rd appearance in the conference tournament, a league record. No. 4 seed Providence is making its 11
th conference tournament appearance following a strong regular season. The Friars are eyeing their second BIG EAST title and first since the inaugural tournament in 1993, with the team last advancing to the title game in 2015.
No. 5 seed St. John's returns to the postseason after a title match run two seasons ago. The Red Storm are making their third straight conference tournament appearance and their 18
th appearance overall. Lastly, the No. 6 seed Butler will be making its tenth BIG EAST Championship appearance following its end-of-season heroics to nab the final postseason spot. The Bulldogs will look to score some upsets in hopes of capturing their first conference title since 2015.
