Georgetown Moves Past Seton Hall, 6-3, Thursday Afternoon

MASON, Ohio – In Thursday’s 2023 BIG EAST Baseball Championship Presented by Jeep elimination game at Prasco Park, No. 4 seed Georgetown topped No. 3 seed Seton Hall, 6-3.

The Hoyas will return to Prasco Park Friday at 5 p.m. ET in another elimination game, this time with a spot in Saturday’s title game on the line.

Georgetown got off to an electric start thanks to the bat of sophomore catcher Owen Carapellotti. The Hoyas’ lead off hitter sent the ball high over the right center field scoreboard to give Georgetown the early 1-0 advantage.

Settling in, Seton Hall’s sophomore ace Daniel Fontera retired the next 11 batters he faced and collected four strikeouts through four innings. On the mound for the Hoyas, BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year Jake Bloss kept the Pirates off the board, allowing the Georgetown offense to grow the lead in the top of the fifth.

In the fifth, Carapellotti collected his second RBI of the game with single to right field to send graduate third baseman Angelo D’Acunto home for the 2-0 advantage. On the very next at bat, graduate designated hitter Ubaldo Lopez collected an RBI single, sending junior left fielder Andrew Bergeron around the bases for a 3-0 lead.

The Pirates cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth, when redshirt junior designated hitter Staus Pokrovosky sent the ball deep down the left field line to pull Seton Hall back within two, 3-1.

Overall, Bloss pitched six innings, allowing one earned run and six hits, while striking out four batters. For the Pirates, Frontera pitched five innings, allowing five hits, three earned runs, while striking out five batters.

The Pirates cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore third baseman Pat D’Amico scored from third base, after a ground out RBI by senior right fielder Oscar Murray.

In the top of the eighth, junior right fielder Jake Hyde put the game out of reach with a shot to right field to give the Hoyas a commanding 6-2 lead. On the home run, both junior second baseman Michael Eze and Lopez rounded the bases.
