NEW YORK – On the eve of the 2023 BIG EAST Men’s Lacrosse Championship presented by JEEP, the league announced the regular season award winners and All-BIG EAST First and Second Teams.
Georgetown, the nation’s eighth-ranked team and BIG EAST regular season champions, earned four major awards – graduate student Tucker Dordevic was unanimously named BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year, graduate student Will Bowen repeated as Defensive Player of the Year and Patrick Crogan was voted Freshman of the Year. In addition, the Hoyas, led by head coach Kevin Warne, were honored as the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year.
Leading Villanova on the offensive end of the field, graduate student Matt Campbell garnered Midfielder of the Year accolades, while Providence graduate student James Corasaniti earned Goalkeeper of the Year honors.
Dordevic, a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team, led the BIG EAST in five conference games with 3.60 goals per game (18 total) in his first season with the Hoyas. Overall, he leads the conference and ranks sixth nationally with 3.54 goals per game (46 total) across all 13 regular season games entering the BIG EAST Tournament. A transfer from Syracuse, Dordevic also dished out nine assists, capping the regular season with a team leading 55 points. Along with his offensive prowess, the five-time BIG EAST Attack Player of the Week has collected 26 ground balls and forced five caused turnovers in 2023. Dordevic is Georgetown’s fourth Attack Player of the Year, joining Daniel Bucaro, Jake Carraway and Dylan Watson, winners in 2019, 2021 and 2022, respectively.
Villanova’s Campbell was also a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team, while becoming the fourth Villanova student-athlete in program history to earn BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year accolades. The midfielder is tied for first in the BIG EAST with 4.29 points per game (60 overall), finding the back of the net 35 times and dishing out 25 assists. In five conference games, he tallied 19 points with 10 goals and nine assists. The midfielder has collected 24 ground balls and caused five turnovers entering the BIG EAST Tournament.
Anchoring the Georgetown back line for the second consecutive season, Bowen captured BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year accolades and was a unanimous selection on the All-BIG EAST First Team. With 1.92 caused turnovers per game (25 overall), he leads the BIG EAST and ranks 13th nationally. In his two seasons since transferring from North Carolina, Bowen has a BIG EAST leading 59 caused turnovers in 30 games. As a team, Georgetown ranks 16
th in the nation and first in the BIG EAST with 9.36 caused turnovers per game in 2023. Will Bowen is just the third student-athlete in BIG EAST history to repeat as Defensive Player of the Year, joining Villanova’s John LoCascio (2013 and 2014) and Brian Karalunas (2010 and 2011).
Providence’s Corasaniti has been named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year, becoming the fourth Providence student-athlete to garner the award. The Providence netminder leads the league and ranks ninth nationally with 13.71 saves per game over the course of the regular season, in addition to registering a .493 save percentage on 140 shots faced in conference play. Corasaniti averaged 11.80 saves per game during five conference games, registering a career-high 23 saves at Georgetown on April 8.
Warne and his staff won Coaching Staff of the Year honors for the fifth time. The Hoyas won the BIG EAST regular season crown outright for the second time in program history with a perfect 5-0 league record for the second straight season. Georgetown finished the regular season 10-3 riding a 10-game winning streak. The Hoyas lead the conference in multiple statistical categories, including goals scored per game (14.31), assists per game (8.08), ground balls per game (40.23), and caused turnovers per game (9.31).
Crogan, the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, is the third Hoya to garner the award. The rookie from Lexington, Mass., registered 15 points on the season, finding the back of the net 11 times and dishing out four assists. Crogan also hit the target on 75.0-percent of his shots, capping the regular season shooting 21-for-28. The freshman registered his first career hat-trick in a 17-15 win over Lehigh on March 25.
In addition to the regular season awards, the BIG EAST also released its 2023 First and Second teams.
The All-BIG EAST First Team is calculated by position and includes three attackers, three midfielders, three defenders, a long-stick midfielder, a short-stick defensive midfielder, a faceoff specialist and a goalie. The All-BIG EAST Second Team includes votes for a goalkeeper, LSM, specialty player and 10 at-large players. No ties are broken, which resulted in 15 players on the second team.
Four players in addition to Bowen, Campbell and Dordevic were unanimous selections to the First Team. The teams and awards are voted on by the conference’s six head coaches who are not allowed to cast ballots for their own team.
