Georgetown Women, Villanova Men Take X-C Titles

LEESBURG, Va. – The Georgetown women claimed their fifth straight title and the Villanova men won their second crown in three years at The BIG EAST Cross Country Championships presented by JEEP held at Morven Park in Leesburg, Va.
 
The Georgetown women edged runner-up Providence 42-43 with the help of three runners finishing in the top 10. Chloe Scrimgeour, last year’s individual winner, took third place with a time of 19:53.12. Lucy Jenks (19:59.30) was fifth and Melissa Riggins (20:09.08) finished seventh.
 
UConn’s Chloe Thomas took first place individually winning by a comfortable 14.01 second edge over runner-up Alex Millard of Providence. Thomas covered the 6K run on the hilly course in 19:36.60. Millard paced three Friars in the top 10 with a time of 19:50.61. The other top PC performers were Kimberley May (20:00.65) who was sixth and Shannon Flockhart (20:13.83) who took eighth.
 
In the men’s race, Villanova’s Liam Murphy became the first back-to-back BIG EAST champion since the Wildcats’ Patrick Tiernan won four straight titles from 2013-16. Murphy ran the 8K race in 23:12.83, which was almost 16 seconds ahead of teammate and runner-up Marco Langon, who had a time of 23:28.27. They were supported by teammates Bailey Habler (23:58.35) who took fourth and Devon Comber (24:14.48) who finished 10th.
 
Villanova edged Butler 35-41 for first place in the team standings. The Bulldogs had three runners in the top 10. William Zegarski (23:45.50) was third. Florian Le Pallec (24:02.03) finished sixth. Austin Gabay (24:06.51) was eighth.
