On Saturday, five BIG EAST teams and three individuals will compete in the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships.
Thirty-one teams and 38 individuals were selected to participate in each championship. The races are being held at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course located in Madison, Wisconsin.
On the women’s side, Georgetown and Providence have teams competing while Sadie Sigfstead from Villanova and Chloe Thomas and Jenna Zydanowicz from UConn will race as individuals. Their 6K race starts at 10:20 a.m. ET on ESPNU.
On the men’s side, Butler, Georgetown and Villanova all have teams competing. Their 10K race starts at 11:10 a.m. ET on ESPNU.
The Providence women qualified after winning the Northeast Regional on Nov. 15. The Friars had four runners in the top 10: Kimberley May in third, Alex Millard in fourth, Shannon Flockhart in fifth and Laura Mooney in 10
th.
The Georgetown women secured their spot in the championship after finishing second in the Mid-Atlantic Regional. The Hoyas were led by Chloe Scrimgeour who finished second overall with a time of 19:25:5. Four other Hoyas were in the top 20.
UConn’s Thomas is headed to the championship after becoming the first Husky to ever win the Northeast Regional. She is joined by teammate Zydanowicz who finished sixth overall. This is the first time two Huskies have individually qualified for the championship in the same season.
Villanova’s Sigfstead will head to the championship for the third time in her career after she recorded a third-place individual finish at the Mid-Atlantic Regional.
The Villanova men received an automatic bid after winning the Mid-Atlantic Regional. Their leader, Liam Murphy, won his third straight individual Mid-Atlantic Regional title. His teammate Marco Langon came in second.
The Butler men are headed to their fifth consecutive championship after earning an at-large bid. The team placed third in the Great Lakes Regional. The Bulldogs were led by William Zegarski who won the individual title by .2 seconds.
Georgetown’s men also received an at-large bid after a third-place finish at the Mid-Atlantic Regional where four Hoys finished in the top 20. This is their sixth consecutive championship.
