BOYDS, Md. – The 2024 BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship presented by JEEP concludes on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET on FS2 when No. 2 seed Providence faces No. 4 seed Georgetown at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md. The winner of the BIG EAST Championship receives the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The selection show is scheduled for Monday at 1 p.m. on NCAA.com. The Friars edged No. 3 seed St. John’s in overtime, 2-1, in the Semifinals on Thursday, while the Hoyas won a nailbiter against No. 1 seed Akron in overtime, 2-1.
The Hoyas and Friars have matched up against each other 43 times in history, with Georgetown leading the all-time series, 24-15-4 and 4-1-1 in the BIG EAST Tournament. The squads have met in the championship game on two occasions (2021, 2019) with the Hoyas coming out on top in both meetings. Earlier this season, the Hoyas defeated Providence, 3-0, at Shaw Field in a regular season matchup.
No. 25 Providence enters the matchup with a 12-4-3 overall record, and is led offensively by Bruno Rosa’s team-high 15 points (5G, 5A). Defensively, graduate goalkeeper Lukas Burns has played every minute in net and has corralled 62 saves, posted a .785 save percentage, issued seven shutouts and has allowed just 0.90 goals per game. In the overtime win over St. John’s on Thursday, Burns made seven saves to lead the Friars.
No. 24 Georgetown heads into Sunday’s match with a 10-4-5 overall mark. Matthew Van Horn is leading the Hoya offense with six goals and three assists for 15 points on the season. Junior goalkeeper Tenzing Manske has seen a majority of the minutes in the net for the Hoyas. He holds a 0.60 goals-against average and a 0.791 save percentage to go along with 34 saves, a 9-4-2 record and nine shutouts for the year. The Hoyas are leading the country in shutouts with 11, and Manske is ranked second in the nation in GAA.
