Akron Opens NCAA Tournament with 1-0 Win Over Princeton

AKRON, Ohio -
The 13th-rated University of Akron men's soccer team earned a 1-0 shutout victory over Princeton on Thursday (Nov. 21) at FirstEnergy Stadium in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.

How it Happened

The two teams battled through a scoreless opening stanza, one in which the Zips outshot the Tigers, 15-1, including 5-1 on net.

Akron broke the scoreless tie when redshirt senior Victor Gaulmin (Guipavas, France) notched his fifth goal of the season in the 55th minute (54:28), assisted by redshirt senior Emil Jaaskelainen (Bolton, England) and senior Wan Kuzri Wan Kamal (Carbondale, Ill.).

Game Notes

  • Redshirt junior GK Mitch Budler totaled three saves for the Zips out of seven total Tigers shots and recorded his ninth shutout of the season
  • Akron collected 11 shots on goal
  • Senior Dyson Clapier (Layton, Utah) posted a game-high eight shots, including four on goal, while Jaaskelainen recorded seven shots, with three falling on frame
  • The Zips outshot Princeton, 27-7, including 11-3 on goal
