Pirates Prevail, Johnnies Lose At Buzzer

MBB Minute – Both Seton Hall and St. John’s went to overtime in their tournament games on Thursday. The Pirates beat previously unbeaten VCU 69-66 in the Charleston Classic and the Johnnies lost to Baylor 99-98 in double overtime at the Baha Mar Hoops Classic in the Bahamas.
 
With the split, BIG EAST teams are 44-8 (.846) going into Friday.
 
Seton Hall was boosted by Chaunce Jenkins, who scored all 22 of his points after halftime. Reserve forward David Tubek was 3-of-3 from beyond the arc for a career-high nine points. The Hall (3-2) shot a season-best 58.3 percent from 3-point range while VCU managed only 24.3 percent (9-of-37) against the Pirate defense.
 
Seton Hall plays Vanderbilt Friday at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
 
St. John’s led by 18 in the first half and by five in the second extra period, but lost on a 3-pointer at the buzzer to No. 13 Baylor. Zuby Ejofor finished with team highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds. Aaron Scott came off the bench to make 5-of-6 from 3-point range and scored 20 points. Kadary Richmond played a game-high 44:36 minutes and contributed 14 points, seven assists, four rebounds and two steals.
 
St. John’s plays Virginia at 7 p.m. on CBSSN.
 
In addition to Seton Hall and St. John’s, two more league teams play Friday. Butler will look to improve to 4-1 when it hosts Merrimack at 7 p.m. on FS2. No. 14 Creighton meets in-state rival Nebraska 8 p.m. on FS1. The Bluejays have taken 11 of the last 13 meetings.
