MBB Minute: Kalkbrenner Nets 49 In Creighton Win; UConn, Georgetown Win, Villanova Loses

MBB Minute – Creighton center Ryan Kalkbrenner, the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year, lived up to the accolade and then some with a memorable performance in the Bluejays’ season opener.
 
No. 15 Creighton 99, UT-Rio Grande Valley 86 – Kalkbrenner filled his stat line with a career-high 49 points, the fifth highest scoring total by a BIG EAST player in any game, on 20-of-22 shooting from the field. He also had 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. Steven Ashworth contributed 25 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
 
No. 3 UConn 92, Sacred Heart 56 – Alex Karaban led the charge for the Huskies with 20 points, seven rebounds and a career-high seven blocked shots. Liam McNeeley, the BIG EAST Preseason Freshman of the Year, had 18 points and 10 rebounds in his collegiate debut. Solo Ball added 16 points. Tarris Reed Jr. finished with 15 points and 11 boards.
 
Georgetown 85, Lehigh 77 – The Hoyas are 1-0 after freshman Thomas Sorber led the way with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Micah Peavy also scored 20. Added contributions from Jayden Epps (17 points) and Malik Mack (15) gave the Hoyas 72 of their 85 points.
 
Columbia 90, Villanova 80 – Eric Dixon scored 33 points and went over the 1,500-point plateau, but the Wildcats (1-1) lost at home to Columbia. Dixon, who also had seven rebounds, was one point short of his career high. Wooga Poplar added 16 points.
 
In the only game on Thursday’s schedule, DePaul hosts Prairie View A&M at 8 p.m. ET on FS1.
