Butler, Georgetown, Marquette Earn First Set of #BIGEASTwlax Weekly Awards

BIG EAST Attacker of the Week
Meg Bireley, Marquette, Jr., A
Bireley started off the season with a bang, posting a career-high seven goals in Marquette’s 18-12 opening win over Cincinnati on Sunday. The junior was a consistent presence on the offensive end throughout the matchup, totaling career highs in shots (12) and shots on goal (10). She also helped out with a caused turnover and ground ball, leading the Golden Eagles to a 1-0 start.
 
BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week
Leah Rubino, Butler, Sr., M
After being named a Preseason All-BIG EAST Team selection, Rubino opened the season by tying her own program record with seven goals in Butler’s 13-12 victory over Central Michigan on Friday. The senior midfielder helped lead the charge on a Bulldogs comeback, including netting the game-winning score with 2:45 remaining on the clock. She added four ground balls and three caused turnovers in the win.
 
BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Lily Athanas, Georgetown, Jr., D
Athanas played a key role in Georgetown’s 18-13 victory over American on Saturday, helping to allow just 16 total shots on goal in the opening win. The junior recorded seven draw controls, caused two turnovers, and two ground balls in the contest, keeping opponent attacks at bay.
 
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Emily Eckert, Butler, Fr., M
In her collegiate debut, Eckert recorded two goals and two assists to help propel Butler to a 13-12 win over Central Michigan. She scored the first goal of her career in her first quarter of play, and later knotted the game at 5-5 with another score in the second quarter.
 
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Megan Klingenberg, Denver, So., D – helped lead the Pioneers to a dominant 16-8 victory over Louisville on Friday, allowing just 14 shots on goal; recorded one caused turnover and one ground ball in the contest
Emma Gebhardt, Georgetown, Jr., A led the way in the scoring department for Georgetown, netting seven goals and an assist in an 18-13 win over American on Saturday
Kaitlyn Huber, Marquette, Sr., D – posted career highs in caused turnovers (3), grounds balls (2), and draw controls (1) in Marquette’s 18-12 win over Cincinnati on Sunday
