INDIANAPOLIS – The UConn women and Xavier men got off to a quick start and hold the lead following the first night of the 2024 BIG EAST Swim and Dive Championships presented by Jeep.
The Huskies scored big in the diving event and lead the charge with 244 points. Seton Hall sits in second with 180 points, while 10-time reigning champion Villanova is in third with 171 points.
On the men’s side, Xavier holds the advantage with 80 points, while Georgetown (68) and Seton Hall (62) sit in the second and third spot, respectively.
Xavier took the opening women’s 200 medley relay, collecting 64 points, in 1:39.95. Villanova claimed second (1:40.60) followed by Seton Hall in third (1:42.76).
The Xavier Musketeers were also victorious in the men’s 200 medley relay (1:27.23), edging second place Georgetown (1:28.05). Seton Hall’s squad rounded out the top three, touching the wall in 1:28.31.
UConn separated from the crowd in the diving tank when junior Julia Pioso secured the gold medal in the 1-meter dive with a score of 307.75. Husky sophomore Olivia Denery placed third with a score of 289.05. Finishing second, Seton Hall graduate senior Silvia Alessio scored 303.55.
Wednesday wrapped with the 800 freestyle relay where the Villanova women were victorious, claiming the event in 7:15.39. Xavier placed second (7:16.03) ahead of Georgetown (7:21.57) in third.
The Musketeers capped the evening with their second victory of the day, winning the men's 800 freestyle relay with a time of 6:32.72. In a close contest for second, Georgetown (6:35.76) overcame Villanova (6:36.84).
Day two will begin at 10 a.m. ET with the prelims of the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free. The men’s 3-meter dive prelims will begin at 1 p.m. The finals will begin at 5:45 p.m., with the 200 freestyle relay closing out the night
