INDIANAPOLIS – The Villanova women and Georgetown men took over the lead in the standings on the second night of the 2024 BIG EAST Swim and Dive Championships presented by Jeep.
The Wildcats edge UConn by 16.5 points, with Villanova capping the night with 503 points. The Huskies will enter the third day of competition with 486.5 points, while Georgetown is in third with 412.5.
On the men’s side, Georgetown scored big in the diving event and hold the advantage with 304 points. In second, Xavier has 263, while Seton Hall has 210.
It was the Pirates who collected the first win of the day, and first individual victory of the weekend, when junior Allie Waggoner touched the wall in a time of 4:47.52. Finishing in second of the women’s 500-freestyle with a time of 4:49.22 was senior Molly Benson from Villanova, while Georgetown freshman Kira Agne rounded out the top-three with a time of 4:50.02.
On the men’s side, it was Georgetown that captured the gold in the 500-freestyle, as junior Jack Januario finished the race with a time of 4:22.43. Seton Hall junior Sean Vizzard placed second with a time of 4:23.01, just ahead of Villanova senior Charlie Hinckley (4:23.70).
In the women’s 200 IM Final, Villanova senior logged an NCAA B-Cut time of 1:59.20 to capture the gold. A pair of Hoyas rounded out the top-three, with Erin Hood touching the wall in a time of 2:00.14, while Angelica Reali finished at 2:00.53.
Villanova senior Nolan Danus set the pace in the men’s 200 IM Final with a time of 1:46.87. Georgetown junior Jack Brearton placed second at 1:48.41, just edging his sophomore teammate Nick Pezzella (1:48.98)
In the fastest races of the weekend, Olivia Oyster of Xavier scored a NCAA B-Cut time in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.61. A pair of freshman rounded out the top-three, with Villanova’s Carlota Colomer (22.99) placing second and Georgetown’s Madelin Malone (23.10) third.
In the men’s 50-yard freestyle, Providence senior Will Layden earned an NCAA B-Cut time of 19.66, while Georgetown graduate senior Shaun Kronenwetter finished second (20.03) and Seton Hall freshman Toma Adam placing third (20.28).
In the men’s 3-meter dive, Georgetown freshman Nick Santiago pulled away from the competition with a score of 342.70. A pair of Pirates finished second and third, with junior Quinn Murtha scoring 330.45 and junior Trevor Post finishing with 330.40.
Closing out the night, first in the women’s 200 freestyle relay, Villanova (1:32.26) finished first by a fraction of a second ahead of Xavier (1:32.38) and Georgetown (1:32.53).
On the men’s side, Xavier (1:20.10) out-paced Providence (1:20.85) to capture the gold, while Georgetown finished in third with a time of 1:21.22.
Day three begins at 10 a.m. ET with the prelims of the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and women’s 3-meter dive. The diving prelims are scheduled for 1 p.m.
