BIG EAST Women’s Singles Player of the Week
Elle Martin, Fr., Butler (Park City, Utah)
Martin enjoyed a 3-0 week in singles play, highlighted by a trio of team victories as the Bulldogs overcame the University of Illinois – Chicago (4-3), Lindenwood (7-0), and Arkansas State (4-2). In the first dual match of her collegiate career, Martin defeated Anais Nrion (4-6, 6-4, 6-4) to clinch the match and snap a 12-match UIC winning streak that dated back to 2009. Playing at No. 5 singles on Saturday, the freshman bested Lindenwood’s Saran Ben Aba 3-6, 6-4, 10-3. Martin wrapped the weekend with a straight set victory over Arkansas State’s Emiliya Margolin (6-2, 6-3) at No. 6 singles.
BIG EAST Women’s Doubles Team of the Week
Mouna Bouzgarrou (Gr., Monastir, Tunisia) & Arina Gumerova (Gr., Ufa, Russia), St. John’s
Bouzgarrou and Gumerova went 2-0 while playing at No. 1 doubles this week. In a 6-1 St. John’s victory over Rider on Wednesday, the pair defeated Laila Fishman and Jett Coetzee, 6-4. On Friday, the duo defeated Marists’ Assi Caterina and Cloe Clements Sorde, 6-1, as the Red Storm blew past the Red Foxes, 4-1.
BIG EAST Men’s Singles Player of the Week
Yuma Daijima, So., Creighton (Tokyo, Japan)
Daijima went undefeated this week, earning a pair of victories at No. 6 singles. First, the sophomore registered a straight set (6-2, 6-2) victory over Youngstown State’s Asier Ibanez as the Bluejays handed YSU its first loss of the season (5-2) on Friday. Daijima followed this with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0, triumph over Drake’s Benjamin Johnson on Saturday for his fifth consecutive singles win.
BIG EAST Men’s Doubles Team of the Week
Leon Petko (Gr., Bratislava, Slovakia) & Ignacio Vinas (Jr., Buenos Aires, Argentina), St. John’s
Petko and Vinas went 2-0 in doubles play this weekend, contributing vital victories as St. John’s surpassed Marist (6-1) and Dartmouth (4-3). Competing at No. 2 doubles, the duo defeated Marist’s Alejandro Casteneda and Oliver Thony, 6-4, on Friday. The following day, the pair helped St. John’s clinch the doubles point with a 6-4 defeat of Dartmouth’s Carlos Guerrero and Hikaru Takeda as the Red Storm became the first team to defeat the Big Green this spring.
