CAYCE, S.C. -- UConn, DePaul, St. John’s, and Xavier advanced to the 2024 BIG EAST Women’s Tennis Championship semifinals with victories in Saturday’s quarterfinal.
Due to inclement weather, the matches will now be contested indoors at the Carolina Tennis Center on the campus of the University of South Carolina.
#1 Xavier, 4 vs. #8 Marquette, 1
The Musketeers were victorious in their championship debut, defeating Marquette 4-1. The Golden Eagles grabbed the doubles point with victories at No. 1 [Andie Weise and Lara Kaiser def. Anna Roggenburk and Imani Graham, 7-6 (5)] and No. 2 (Emma Davis and Tiana Windbuchler def. Ellie Brotherton and Abby Nugent, 6-4). Xavier’s No. 3 doubles, Emily Flowers and Sofia Mazzucato, defeated Tiera Jarmond and Emilija Kojcic.
Xavier quickly countered at No. 5 singles as Sofia Mazzucato defeated Windbuchler 6-2, 6-0. The two-time Championship Most Outstanding Player, Roggenburk, followed with a defeat of Windbuchler (6-2, 6-0). The Musketeers lead extended further on the sixth court where Flowers was victorious over Lara Kaiser 6-2, 6-2. Nugent clinched the match at No. 3, overcoming Andie Weise 6-3, 6-1.
Top-seeded Xavier will face #4 UConn in the semifinals on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. ET.
#2 DePaul, 4 vs. #7 Villanova, 1
DePaul dismissed Villanova with a 4-1 victory in the quarterfinals. The Blue Demons took the match’s first point at No. 1 (Greta Carbone and Hannah Smith def. Ami Grace Dougah and Miriam Gondorova, 6-0) and No. 2 (Emily Casati and Yuliya Kizelbasheva def. Emily Callahan and Maggie Gehrig, 6-0) doubles.
Eleanor Nobbs opened singles play with a straight-set win over Gehrig, taking the match 6-1, 6-1. Villanova responded with a victory on the first court (Dougah def. Smith 6-2, 6-2). Playing at No. 4 singles, Kizelbasheva propelled the Blue Demons further by surpassing Jenna Stevens 6-2, 6-2. Eva Goncharov clinched the match at No. 6, defeating Valieriia Kornieva 6-1, 6-2.
Second-seeded DePaul will take on #6 St. John’s in Sunday’s second semifinal at 1:00 p.m. ET.
#3 Georgetown, 2 vs. #6 St. John’s, 4
Sixth-seeded St. John’s prevailed over #3 Georgetown, 4-2. Noemi Babikova and Alicia Gomez opened the match with a win at No. 2 doubles, defeating Katie Garofolo-Ro and Ashley Kennedy, 6-1. Mouna Bouzgarrou and Arina Gumerova conquered Olivia Ashton and Chloe Benedetti at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, to take the point.
Georgetown countered with a straight-set win at No. 2 singles (Novikov def. Gumerova (6-2, 6-3). The Red Storm returned the point at No. 4 with Babikova besting Kennedy 6-3, 6-3. Nicole Sartz-Lunde moved the Johnnies into the lead with a 6-2, 7-6(6) victory over Avantika Willy at No. 3. Gomez grabbed the match-clinching fourth point at No. 5, defating Garofolo-Ro 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
The Red Storm will meet the Blue Demons in the semifinals.
#4 UConn, 4 vs. #5 Creighton, 0
UConn earned its spot in the semifinals with a 4-0 victory over Creighton. The Huskies took the doubles point on the first and second court behind victories from Olivia Wright and Maria Constantinou (No. 1, def. Malvika Shukla and Valerie Negin, 6-1) as well as Caroline Hinshaw and Isabel Petri Bere (No. 2, Bianca Rademacher and Siri Kongara, 6-3).
The momentum continued with a victory at No. 4 singles as Cameron Didion defeated Ana Paula Martinez 6-2, 6-0. Wright followed with a [7-6, 6-3] victory over Shukla at No. 1. Constantinou closed the match at No. 2, surpassing Negin in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-1).
Fourth-seeded UConn will meet #1 Xavier in the first semifinals.
