Men's #BEsoccer Semifinal Action Set for Thursday Night

BOYDS, Md. – The BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship Presented by JEEP begins Thursday with the semifinals scheduled to start at 5 p.m. ET. No. 2 seed Akron meets No. 3 seed UConn in the first contest followed by No. 1 seed Georgetown matching up against No. 4 seed Providence at 7:30 p.m. The Championship venue is the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md.

The semifinal winners will meet Sunday at 12 p.m. for the championship title and the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The 2025 NCAA Men’s Soccer Selection Show will be held Monday afternoon at 1 p.m. on ncaa.com.

The first semifinal contest matches up Akron and UConn. The Zips are the No. 2 seed in the tournament after locking up the Midwest division for the second consecutive season. Akron ranks 14th in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, as well as ninth in the RPI. The Zips enter the contests with an 11-3-3 (5-2-1 BIG EAST) overall record. The Huskies are the No. 3 seed and rank 20th in the RPI and are receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches rankings. UConn sits at 10-3-4 (5-2-1 BE) on the season. The Huskies enter the tournament winning back-to-back games, as well as closing out the regular season going 3-0-1. UConn garnered a league best six All-BIG EAST selections on Wednesday, highlighted by Sabri Hanni earning a first team nod. Austin Brummet, a second team selection, leads the team with seven goals and 17 points. Akron closed out the regular season riding a six-game unbeaten streak and placed five players on the All-BIG EAST teams. The Zips also collected two major awards with Offensive Player of the Year Stefan Dobrijevic and Goalkeeper of the Year Mitch Budler. UConn enters the matchup leading the series 1-0-3, winning the 2025 regular season matchup 3-1.

Fresh off a meeting between the two squads on Friday, Nov. 7, Georgetown and Providence are set for a rematch Thursday night at the Maryland SoccerPlex. The Hoyas and Friars capped the night with a 2-2 draw, after the Friars came back with a pair of late goals to secure a BIG EAST Championship berth. The Hoyas enter the weekend ranked 15th nationally, boasting a 10-3-4 (6-0-2 BE) record. The Friars capped the regular season 6-6-3 (4-4-2 BE). The Hoyas are led offensively by BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year Zach Zengue, who leads the conference with 13 goals and 35 points. The Friars are led by Sam Montaloto (5 goals and 13 points) and Pearse O’Brien (6 assists). The duo have met up 45 times all-time and seven times in the BIG EAST Tournament, with the Hoyas leading the way with a 25-15-5 overall record and 5-1-1 record in the postseason.
