Marquette Defeats Providence; Four Games Set For Wednesday

MBB Minute – In Tuesday’s only game, No. 21 Marquette used a barrage of 3-pointers to defeat visiting Providence 82-52. The jockeying for tournament seed position continues Wednesday with a four-game schedule. With 19 games remaining in the regular season, no BIG EAST Tournament seeds have been determined.

Marquette (21-7, 12-5 BIG EAST) made a season-high 17 3-pointers, the most made by any team in a conference game this season, and took a school record 41 attempts. Ben Gold and Kam Jones each scored 17 points and Stevie Mitchell added 14. That trio shot a combined 11-of-22 from beyond the arc. Jayden Pierre led Providence (12-16, 6-11) with 13 points.

No. 7 St. John’s (24-4, 15-2) can clinch a tie for the regular season title with a win at Butler (13-14, 6-10). The game will be telecast on CBSSN at 9 p.m. ET. The Bulldogs have won four of their last five. A St. John’s win and a Creighton loss will give the Red Storm the outright crown.

Creighton (19-8, 12-4) hosts DePaul on Peacock, also at 9 p.m. With a victory, the Bluejays can match their best 17-game start ever in BIG EAST play, having also started 13-4 in 2020-21 and 2013-14.

Connecticut (18-9, 10-6) plays at Georgetown (16-11, 7-9) at 6:30 p.m. on FS1. The Huskies want to win to remain alone in fourth place. They have a half-game lead on Xavier (18-10, 10-7). The Hoyas want to stay in the hunt for fifth place and a first-round tournament bye.

Villanova (16-12, 9-8) is another team in the middle of the standings trying to reach the fifth spot. The Wildcats play at Seton Hall (7-20, 2-14) at 8:30 p.m. on FS1. Villanova ranks second nationally in 3-point shooting, making 40.3 percent. They are also second in free throw shooting, connecting at 81.4 percent.
