MBB Minute – In Wednesday’s action, UConn moved into a tie with Marquette for third place with a win over the Golden Eagles. Streaking Xavier moved into fifth with a victory at Butler. And DePaul won its first road game in conference play this season with a come-from-behind victory at Providence.
Going into Saturday’s regular season finale, the known seeds are: No. 1 St. John’s, No. 6 Villanova and No. 7 Georgetown. Butler and Providence will play in the 8-9 game. A full five-game slate will determine the rest of the bracket for the BIG EAST Tournament that begins Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.
UConn and
Marquette are tied for third, but the Huskies (21-9, 13-6) own the No. 3 seed today because it has swept the Golden Eagles (22-8, 13-6) after a 71-66 win at Gampel Pavilion. UConn’s Alex Karaban hit a decisive 3-pointer with 25 seconds left to give the home team a 70-66 lead. Karaban led five players in double figures with 21 points. Marquette’s David Joplin netted a game-high 23 points and Kam Jones added 21.
Xavier racked up its sixth straight win, beating
Butler 91-78. The Musketeers (20-10, 12-7) led 44-40 at the break and started the second half with a 14-2 run to pull away from the Bulldogs (13-17, 6-13). XU’s Zach Freemantle scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Dailyn Swain added 16 points and 10 boards. Butler’s Jahmyl Telfort had 20 points and Finley Bizjack matched his career high with 19 points.
Trailing 31-15 in the first half,
DePaul used a 22-5 run in the second half and came back to win at
Providence 80-77. The Blue Demons (12-18, 3-16) were led by CJ Gunn’s 23 points and seven rebounds. Corey Floyd Jr. paced the Friars (12-18, 6-13) by tying his career scoring high with 25 points. Ryan Mela added 18 points, six boards and four steals.
