Day One of the 2025 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships Concludes

STORRS, Conn. – The 2025 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships presented by JEEP kicked off on Thursday with decathlon and heptathlon multi-events, as well as the hammer throw, women’s high jump and 10,000-meter run. All events are taking place at Sherman Sports Complex on the campus of University of Connecticut.
 
On the women’s side, UConn finished day one leading with 27 points, followed by Villanova (17), Georgetown (10), Providence (10), DePaul (7), Butler (4) and St. John’s (3).


Butler (23) leads the men’s teams at the conclusion of day one. DePaul finishes the day with 20 points for second, followed by UConn (14), Georgetown (11), Marquette (5) and Villanova (5).

Friday's schedule begins at noon ET with both the men’s decathlon 110-meter hurdles and the women’s heptathlon long jump. Field events start at 3 p.m. with the men's long jump, while running events begin at 2 p.m. with the 1,500-meter prelims.

The BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports will broadcast the running events live starting at 2 p.m. along with highlights of the field events. Adam Giardino will be on the call, with Kacy Standohar reporting.

Men’s Decathlon
Today’s decathlon events included the 100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400-meter dash. UConn’s Joshua Mooney is first on the leaderboard with 3,936 points followed by Marquette’s Gus Kasun (3,711) and Husky Max Ringwall (3,689) to round out the top three. Mooney finished first in the 100-meter dash (10.73), long jump (6.96m) and shot put (12.74m). Connecticut's Dar Jankovic claimed the top spot in the high jump for the second year in a row (2.06m) and currently sits in fourth overall (3,641). Teammate Michael Johnson sits in sixth with a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash (48.35).  The remaining five events are scheduled for Friday.

Women’s Heptathlon
Today’s four heptathlon events were on the schedule including the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200-meter dash. UConn's Audrey Kozak leads the heptathlon with 3,112 points after day one, taking first place in the 100-meter hurdles (14.49), high jump (1.61m) and 200-meter dash (24.24m). She’s followed closely by teammate Mackenzie Braunstein (2,971 points) who placed first in the shot put (10.43m), and Butler’s Lily Wharton (2,848 points). The remaining three events will take place on Friday.

Hammer Throw
For the women's hammer throw, UConn’s Natalia Surdej took home the gold with a final distance of 55.71 meters. Villanova’s Alexandra Payne placed in second (53.87m), while UConn’s Gabriela DeFelice came in third (50.41m). On the men's side, Alex Bernstein of DePaul claimed first with a throw of 66.02m. Connecticut’s Travis Roux followed in second place (64.57m), while fellow Husky Alex Krause placed third (59.16m).
 
10,000 Meters
In the day's final event, Georgetown's Chloe Scrimgeour set a BIG EAST Championship record in the women’s 10,000 meters with a time of 32:13.64 to beat her previous record of 32:36.25 set last year. Providence’s Alex Millard came in second with a time of 32:53.97, while Villanova’s Margaret Carroll crossed the finish line in 34:17.69 for third place. On the men’s side, Butler recorded two of the three medals, as William Zegarski took first place with a time of 28:46.14 to become the sixth Bulldog to take gold in the event. Bulldog teammate Matthew Forrester finished in second 29:03.17, while Georgetown rounded out the top three with a time of 29:54.79.
