MASON, Ohio – In Thursday’s elimination game of the 2025 BIG EAST Baseball Championship Presented by Jeep at Prasco Park, No. 2 seed UConn powered past No. 4 seed St. John’s, 13-3.
The Huskies will return to Prasco Park Friday at 5 p.m. ET in another elimination game, this time with a spot in Saturday’s title game on the line.
Through the opening two innings, UConn and St. John’s traded runs before the Huskies opened the game up.
In the top of the first, Shaun McMillan singled through the right side to send Jackson Tucker home for the early 1-0 St. John’s lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Rob Rispoli crossed home plate to tie the game at 1-1 off a single by Aidan Dougherty.
In the next inning, Jon LeGrande tripled for the Johnnies, as Luke Orbon added a tally to the scoreboard, before Rispoli tied it back up with an RBI single to send Beau Root home for UConn.
The Huskies extended their scoring streak with another run in the bottom of the third, as Bryan Padilla singled through the left side to send Dougherty home.
In the top of the fourth, Orbon smacked a shot to center field to even the score at three, before the Huskies ran away with a 10-0 run.
UConn scored four runs in back-to-back innings, beginning with a two-run shot to center field by Ryan Daniels. Moments later, Dougherty homered down the right field line, allowing Sam Biller to score as well.
In the bottom of the fifth, UConn extended the lead to 11-3, with an RBI single by Caleb Shpur, before Tyler Minick tallied a three-run homer, his 22
nd long ball of the season and second of the tournament.
The scoring continued into the sixth inning with a double by Padilla and a single by Rispoli to extend the lead to 13-3.
On the mound, Greg Shaw III pitched five scoreless innings of relief to seal the contest, striking out three on five hits.
Offensively, Dougherty led the way for UConn going 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored.
