BIG EAST WBB Minute: BIG EAST Play Resumes Wednesday Night

Fourth Annual BIG EAST National Girls & Women in Sports Day Game Announced
The BIG EAST Conference will partner with Invesco QQQ and DePaul to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Wednesday, Feb. 4. The DePaul women’s basketball team will host #1 UConn at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT at Wintrust Arena in Chicago. TruTV will broadcast the matchup with J.B. Strong Named Naismith & AP Women’s Basketball Player of the Week
UConn sophomore forward Sarah Strong led the Huskies to a 2-0 week over Xavier and then-No. 15 Tennessee last week. Strong posted back-to-back 25+ points in both wins as top-ranked UConn remains undefeated (23-0). She ended the week averaging 25.5 points on 62% shooting from the field, 7.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.5 blocks.

Fudd Named Meyers Drysdale Top 10 Candidate
UConn graduate assistant Azzi Fudd is one of 10 candidates for the 2026 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award, as announced by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association on Tuesday. The Ann Meyers Drysdale Award, in its ninth year, honors the top shooting guard in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. Fudd is averaging 17.1 points per game this season on a .487/.441/.971 shooting split.

Stat Leaders Around the BIG EAST
*Halle Vice (Marquette) leads the BIG EAST in rebounds: 48 offensive, 151 defensive, and 199 total, averaging 9.05 a game. She is also 27th in the NCAA in double-doubles this season with nine.
*Marquette’s Skylar Forbes is 25th in the NCAA for blocks per game and first in the BIG EAST, averaging 2.00 a game.
*Creighton leads the BIG EAST in free-throw percentage and is 13th in the NCAA (.784).
*Seton Hall’s Savannah Catalon leads the BIG EAST in free-throw percentage at 0.890 and is 22nd in the NCAA.
*Marquette leads the BIG EAST in blocked shots per game with 5.05 a game and is 21st in the NCAA. 
*Xavier sophomore Meri Kanerva leads the NCAA in minutes per game, averaging 38.09 minutes a game and 837 total. 
*Creighton freshman Neleigh Gessert is in the top 10 in the NCAA for 3 pointers per game with 3.05.


Ziebell, Gessert Earn BIG EAST Weekly Awards (2.2)
UConn sophomore guard Allie Ziebell collected her first BIG EAST Player of the Week honor of the season. Ziebell averaged 22.0 points on a .667/.632/.800 shooting split in wins over Xavier and No. 15 Tennessee. Creighton freshman guard Neleigh Gessert earned her second BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Gessert averaged 16.5 points in a 2-0 week against St. John’s and Seton Hall. Gessert started the week with 17 points on 46% shooting in the team’s 81-51 win over St. John’s.

BIG EAST to Provide Public Availability Reports for Men's and Women's Basketball
Beginning in the 2025-26 season, the BIG EAST Conference will provide public reports on the availability of student-athletes in conference games for men's and women's basketball. BIG EAST schools will be required to submit these reports three hours before the scheduled tipoff. Under this reporting system, players will be designated as "questionable" or "out.” Availability reports will be posted on the BIG EAST website throughout the 2025-26 season. Women's Basketball Availability Reports
