WASHINGTON – The No. 3 seeded Georgetown women's soccer team advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday afternoon after it beat Central Connecticut State University 6-0. The Hoyas had five different players score with junior Julia Leas scoring and assisting twice for the Blue & Gray. Georgetown will play the winner of the matchup between reigning 2020 champions Santa Clara and Stanford.
Head Coach Dave Nolan
The score line is probably a bit unfair to Central Connecticut. The weather today was crazy, I think we had four seasons in just the first half and the wind was particularly challenging for both teams. The game never really evened out and didn't become a soccer game until the second half. We were happy enough with the first half and playing into a strong wind as I think we had the better of the chances, but they had some moments on some set pieces. In the second half it was a matter of them playing into the wind; if we got the first one early enough it was going to make it difficult for them. Once we got the first one it forced them to have to come out and play a little bit and be braver. Once we got the second one, it was a choice for their coach to try and get back into the game or try and keep the score down. To be fair to him, they tried to get back in the game which left them more vulnerable and we took advantage of that. Great to have a shutout and great to get some goals. Erica Harwood scored her first collegiate goal, Sophie fox scored a goal, and Julia getting two to add to her arsenal of talents. Overall it was a great result and great performance and we're super happy about that.
