BIG EAST Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
Simon Bedard, Butler, Gr., Distance (Malestroit, France.)
Simon Bedard posted a time of 7:51.52 in the 3000m race on Saturday at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational. Within a half-second of breaking the program record, the graduate student took over first-place in the event among BIG EAST competitors and No. 36 nationally.
BIG EAST Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
Malik Cunningham, Villanova, Sr., Triple Jump (St. Andrew, Jamaica)
Defending the men’s weekly Field Athlete honor, Malik Cunningham improved on his record setting jump from a week ago, leaping to a mark of 16.12m. The jump pushed the senior up 10 positions to 11
th in the national qualifying list, while maintaining the longest jump in the BIG EAST this season.
BIG EAST Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
McKenna Keegan, Villanova, Gr., Distance (Seattle, Wash.)
McKenna Keegan ran the nation’s fifth-leading time in the 800m when she was clocked in at the Husky Classic (2:03.48). It was her first race of the season in her signature event and put her into position to qualify for the NCAA Championships for a second straight year. Overall, McKenna and her former teammate Siofra Cleirigh Buttner combine for the top nine indoor times in Villanova’s record book and are the only Wildcats ever to break 2:04.50 indoors.
BIG EAST Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Mikyala Rodgers, UConn, Jr., Weight Throw (South Huntington, N.Y.)
Mikyala Rodgers earned her third win of the season in the weight throw, topping the championship field at the Rutgers Open. The Junior tossed a personal-best mark of 19.81 meters in the event, the farthest BIG EAST throw of the week and second best on the season.
Notable Performances
Georgetown’s Joshua Paige ran the 200m event over the weekend, setting a school record and moving into first in the BIG EAST with a time of 21.07s.
DePaul’s Jason Montano now leads the BIG EAST with the farthest shot putt throw of the 2021-22 season (17.06m).
St. John’s Leah Anderson continues to dominate the track, posting the top times in the BE in both the 60m (7.37s) and 200m (23.44) at the Rutgers Open. Overall, she earned the gold in four different events (60m, 200m, 400m and 4x400m) on Saturday.
UConn’s Mia Nahom ran the fastest BIG EAST time in the mile (4:35.27) and 19
th best time in the NCAA, while also setting a new school record. Also, breaking a program mark, Maggie Danahue of Georgetown finished the 5K race in 15:45.98, the fastest time in the BIG EAST.
