CAYCE, S.C. – Championship Sunday at the 2022 BIG EAST Tennis Championships Presented by Jeep produced a pair of repeats, as both the DePaul men and Xavier women became BIG EAST Champions for the second consecutive year. The second-seeded Blue Demons took down No. 1 St. John’s 4-2 on the men’s side, while No. 3 Xavier defeated No. 4 DePaul 4-0 in the women’s title match.

DePaul’s Marino Jakic was named Most Outstanding Player of the men’s championship. Xavier’s Anna Smith was named Most Outstanding Player of the women’s title match.

This marks the first time since 2015 that both the men’s and women’s champions successfully defended their titles from the previous season. That year, the St. John’s men won their second of three straight titles, while the DePaul women won their second straight.

The men’s championship got the day started, and DePaul got off on the right foot by grabbing the doubles point. The two teams split the first two matches in doubles with Tripp Tuff and Luuk Waasenaar of DePaul winning No. 3 doubles, and Axel Vila Antuna and Ignacio Garcia of St. John’s winning at No. 1 doubles. DePaul’s Jona Gitschel and Leon Huck clinched the opening point of the match with a 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles.

In singles action, Garcia got St. John’s on the board with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Wassenaar at the No. 4 slot. The sides remained tied after Vito Tonejc earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles for DePaul, and Ryota Kaneda won on the No. 6 court for St. John’s, 6-3, 6-1. With the match level at 2-2, the Blue Demons would capture two more points in singles play to clinch the title. Matteo Iaquinto earned a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles, followed by Jakic’s 7-6 (1), 6-3 win in No. 2 singles to deliver DePaul its second straight BIG EAST title.

In the women’s championship, Xavier got hot early and maintained that momentum throughout the match. The Musketeers grabbed wins from Kat Lyman/Anna Smith in No. 2 doubles and Anne-Sophie Courteau/Ahmeir Kyle in No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, Blessing Nwaozuzu gave the Musketeers another point on the No. 6 court with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Hristina Djokic. Soon after, Smith closed out DePaul’s Valentina Martin, 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 5 slot. Anna Roggenburk secured the win and the title for Xavier in No. 4 singles, beating DePaul’s Maddie Yergler 6-2, 6-2.

The teams will now wait to see where they will be placed in the Men’s and Women’s NCAA Tournaments. The men’s team bracket will be revealed on Monday, May 2 at 6 p.m. ET, while the women’s team bracket will be unveiled the same night at 6:30 p.m. The men’s and women’s individual fields will be announced on Tuesday, May 3.
