MASON, Ohio - Top-seeded Connecticut kickstarted the 2022 BIG EAST Baseball Championship Presented by Jeep with a 4-0 shutout victory over No. 4 Georgetown Thursday afternoon at Prasco Park.
UConn starter and unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team member Austin Peterson pitched seven scoreless innings with eight strikeouts before Brendan O’Donnell and Devin Kirby closed out the outing with a pair of hitless innings wracking up four combined strikeouts.
Offensively, designated hitter Korey Morton batted 2-for-4 and led the team with a pair of RBI and added a run. Batting third, Casey Dana went 1-for-2 at the plate, in addition to earning two walks and scoring a run.
After a trio of scoreless innings, the Huskies got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Morton singled to bring Ben Huber and Dana home, a 2-0 lead UConn would not look back on.
Defensively, the Huskies were a perfect 34-for-34 in fielding opportunities with 27 putouts and forcing two double plays.
Due to inclement weather, Thursday's second game betweene No. 2 seeded Creighton and No. 3 seeded Xavier was postponed and will now be played Friday at 2:30 p.m. ET. The Hoyas will await its opponent in the first elimination game, scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m.
