Georgetown Wins 2023 BIG EAST Women's Soccer Championship

BOYDS, Md. – No. 2 seed Georgetown defeated No. 1 seed Xavier 2-0 Sunday afternoon in the BIG EAST Women's Soccer Championship Final at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md. With the win, the Hoyas earn the BIG EAST's automatic berth into the 2023 NCAA Championship. The NCAA Championship Selection Show is slated for Monday, Nov. 6, at 4 p.m. ET on NCAA.com.

Allie Winstanley scored the Hoyas’ first goal and was named BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Offensive Player at the end of the contest. Georgetown's Brianne Riley was named Most Outstanding Defensive Player and was named to the 11-person All-Tournament Team.

Fellow Hoyas Natalie Means, Erika Harwood, and Maja Lardner, who put home the second Georgetown goal, were also named to the All-Tournament Team. Xavier saw Shelby Sallee, Natalie Bain and Sonia Vargas named to the team, while UConn’s Cara Jordan and Chioma Okafor, and Providence’s Avery Snead and Kyla Gallagher were also all-tourney selections.

Winstanley was able to put on a crafty move to get past the defender and found the back of the net on a powerful strike in the 13th minute. The score came off assists from Emma Davis and All-BIG EAST First Team member Eliza Turner. Xavier had ample opportunities in the rest of the first half, but were stymied in front of the net. The Hoyas were then able to get an insurance score in the 62nd minute by Maja Lardner, who was on the receiving end of a perfect cross from Winstanley. Turner was credited with another assist on the goal. Allie Augur had another tremendous game in net for Georgetown, recording seven saves in the solo clean sheet for her 12th shutout of the season. The Musketeers outshot the Hoyas 14-5 in the contest.

Georgetown improved to 12-1-7 with the win, while Xavier moved to 14-3-4. Xavier claimed its second consecutive runner-up trophy.

This BIG EAST title is Georgetown's fourth-straight and seventh in the last eight years for head coach Dave Nolan's squad. The Hoyas clinch their 12th consecutive NCAA Championship berth and 14th national postseason bid overall.

Xavier and the rest of the BIG EAST will wait to see if they earn at-large selections. The Musketeers entered the postseason ranked No. 21 in the NCAA RPI. The BIG EAST has three other teams in the RPI top-100 with Providence at No. 39, UConn at No. 49 and St. John's at No. 63.
