UConn Men and Women Claim Third Straight BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Titles

CHICAGO – The Connecticut men and women both captured their third consecutive titles at the BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championships presented by Jeep, which was held at the Dr. Conrad Worrill Track and Field Center at Gately Park.

Six BIG EAST records were surpassed over a spectacular two-day event in Chicago.

The UConn men defeated runner-up Butler with 237 points. The Bulldogs finished with 116 points. The UConn women outscored Villanova with 168 points. The Wildcats finished with 121 points. Georgetown came in third on the women's side with 91 points along with DePaul finishing in fourth with 89 points. On the men's side, Villanova placed third with 105 points, followed by Georgetown with 93 points.

For the women, three athletes were named Co-High Point Performers of the Meet, as Georgetown's Maya Drayton, UConn's Jasmine Barrow, and Villanova's Jane Livingston all finished with 20.0 individual points. Drayton finished first in the 200 meters, second in the 400m and was the anchor in the 4x400-meter relay that placed second. Barrow took the gold in both the women's long jump and triple jump, with a 6.09m mark in the long jump and a 13.04m finish in the triple jump. Livingston also captured two first-place finishes, taking the 60m at 7.47 seconds as well as the 60m hurdles at 8.18s.

Barrow was awarded the Most Outstanding Performer in Field Events for the women after her dominant showings. She is the second consecutive Husky to earn the honor after A'liyah Thomas earned the recognition last year.

Providence's Kimberley May was awarded the Women's Most Outstanding Performer in Track Events after earning the gold and setting a BIG EAST indoor record in the 3,000m, while also anchoring the DMR that took first-place on the first day of events. Her finishing time of 8:54.43 in the 3,000m broke an indoor conference record that had stood since 2004.

Two schools finished tied with the most individual titles on the women's side, as UConn and Villanova both claimed four victories. UConn's list of gold medalists included Alyssa Elliott (Pentathlon), Barrow (Long Jump, Triple Jump), and Mallory Malz (Pole Vault). For the Wildcats, Livingston (60m, 60m hurdles), Sadie Sigfsetad (5000m), and Roschell Clayton (High Jump) nabbed first-place.
 
In another notable performance, Georgetown's Melissa Riggins broke the BIG EAST indoor record in the women's 800m, crossing the line at 2:03.42.

For the men, UConn won the most individual events at the meet with seven. Individual gold medalists for the Huskies included Joshua Mooney (Heptathlon), Anish Rajamanickam (400m), Mawali Osunniyi (High Jump), Marc Morrison (Long Jump), Travis Snyder (Pole Vault), Nicholas Connolly (Shot Put), and Kyle Johnson (Triple Jump).

UConn's Kasey Savage was announced as the High Point Performer of the Meet on the men's side for the third straight season, earning 20.0 points. Savage placed second in the triple jump (14.86m), third in the high jump (2.01m), and third in the long jump (7.24m).

Also for the Huskies, Kyle Johnson received the Men's Most Outstanding Performer in Field Events award, earning the gold in the triple jump and silver in the long jump. Johnson recorded a final mark of 15.19m in the triple jump, along with a 7.27m distance in the long jump.

Two athletes shared the Men's Most Outstanding Performer in Track Events award, with DePaul's Darius Brown and Villanova's Liam Murphy earning co-honors. Brown earned two golds on the weekend as he set a BIG EAST indoor record in the 60m hurdles at 7.63 seconds, while also running the opening leg of the winning 4x400 relay. Murphy also set a BIG EAST indoor record with a 7:42.51 finish in the 3,000m to earn the gold, while also anchoring the first-place DMR which finished at 9:37.24. For Murphy it was his second consecutive first-place finish in the 3,000m.

In the 800m Villanova's Sean Dolan surpassed his own conference indoor record, running a 1:46.90 final mark for his third consecutive win in the event. In the 200m Georgetown's Joshua Paige broke the BIG EAST record he set just the day before, running a 20.90 in the 200m for his third consecutive gold in the event.
