BIG EAST Women’s Singles Player of the Week
Maria Constantinou, Jr., UConn (Nicosia, Cyprus)
Constantinou enjoyed a 3-0, highlighted by a pair of victories over BIG EAST rivals. Playing at No. 2 singles, the junior came from behind to defat UMass’s Thamonpan Jonglerta (4-6, 6-2, 6-3). In conference play, she earned decisive straight set victories over Georgetown’s Avantika Willy (6-1, 6-0) and Villanova’s Maggie Gehrig (6-2, 6-2).
BIG EAST Women’s Doubles Team of the Week
Hannah Smith (So., Silchester, England) and Greta Carbone (Sr., Milan, Italy), DePaul
Smith and Carbone earned a pair of victories over fellow BIG EAST doubles teams while competing at No. 1 singles. The duo defeated St. John’s Mouna Bouzgarrou and Arina Gumerova, 6-4, as DePaul swept the Red Storm, 4-0. The pair followed this performance with a 6-1 victory over Seton Hall’s Aina Plana Ventosa and Arabella Moen. The Blue Demons have won the doubles point in 10 of their last 11 matches and, as a team, hold a 7-0 record against BIG EAST opponents.
BIG EAST Men’s Singles Player of the Week
Armando Sotelo, Fr., St. John’s (Queretaro, Mexico)
Sotelo earned two victories as the Red Storm enjoyed an undefeated week. Against NJIT, the freshman picked up the match-clinching point in the Johnnies’ 4-2 victory, taking down German Lopez Andujar, 6-2, 6-4. On Saturday, Storelo defeated Fordham’s Dhillon Virdee-Oakley, 6-1, 7-6, 7-3 at No. 5 singles for his fifth straight victory.
BIG EAST Men’s Doubles Team of the Week
Ryota Kaneda (Jr., Fukuoka, Japan) and Adam Groves (So., Billericay, England), St. John’s
Kaneda and Groves picked up three wins this week, helping the Red Storm to a trio of team victories. On Wednesday, the pair beat NJIT’s Severin Risan and German Lopez Andujar, 6-3, in St. John’s 4-2 victory. Against BIG EAST opponent Marquette, the duo defeated Ivan Vazquez and Teddy Wong (6-1) en route to a 7-0 team sweep. Kaneda and Groves closed the weekend with a 6-1 triumph over Fordham’s John Mascone and Stefan Stojanovic for their seventh consecutive doubles victory. St. John’s won the match, 6-0.
