NEW YORK – St. John’s Peicheng Chen and Butler’s Kelli Scheck have grabbed BIG EAST weekly golf honors. Chen took first place at The Doc Gimmler Red & Black and Scheck tied for fifth place at the Brittany Kelly Classic.
BIG EAST Male Golfer of the Week
Peicheng Chen, St. John’s, Sr.
Chen captured medalist honors at The Doc Gimmler Red & Black by shooting a 5-under 206. In the final round, the senior carded a 1-under 72 on Bethpage Black. Chen, last year’s individual medalist at the BIG EAST Championship, led a final-round charge that lifted the Red Storm to second place in the team standings. The team’s final round score was 16-over 300.
BIG EAST Female Golfer of the Week
Kelli Scheck, Butler, Jr.
Scheck was the top Bulldog performer at the Brittany Kelly Classic hosted by Ball State. The junior tied for fifth place with a 3-over 219. Scheck recorded rounds of 70, 75 and 74 over the two days of competition. Butler finished third in a 12-team field.
Men’s Notes – St. John’s finished ahead of UConn and Villanova at The Doc Gimmler. The Huskies finished eighth and were led by Connor Goode, who carded an 8-over 219 (69-72-78). Villanova was ninth and led by Ryan Pamer, who finished tied for seventh at 4-over, which was his second top-10 finish this season...Butler’s Leo Zurovac and DePaul’s Ryder Henares tied for fourth place at the Golden Grizzlies Intercollege at even-par 216, It was a career-high finish for Henares. Zurovac’s best round was a 67. In the team standings, Butler took third place and DePaul tied for fourth…Xavier junior Carson Bellish tied for ninth at the JT Poston Invitational in Waynesville, N.C., with an even-par 210 in a field of 88 golfers. He carded rounds of 71, 65 and 74. Bellish owns seven top-15 finishes at Xavier. The Musketeers have five top-five team finishes since the start of the 2023 season…Creighton junior Grant Feldman tied for second place individually and paced the Bluejays to a fourth-place finish at the Wildcat Invitational. Feldman opened with a 3-under 69, then followed with back-to-back rounds of 72 to score a 213. The junior has scored par or better in 17 of his last 30 rounds.
Women’s Notes – In addition to Scheck’s contributions for Butler, teammate Katie Steinman finished one shot behind her teammate with a 220 (+4). Included in Steinman’s score was a program record 67 in the final round. Her round included seven birdies and two bogeys…Seton Hall freshman Marta Aguilar shot a 1-under 71 in the final round of the Nittany Lion Invitational to help the Pirates place ninth. Aguilar finished with a 5-over 221 (74-76-71). She recorded her first sub-par round in only her third collegiate round…In a meet shortened to 36 holes due to rain, Creighton junior Morgan Becker shot an even-par 72 in the second round to help lead the Bluejays to a tie for ninth place at the Kelsey Chugg Invitational in Eden, Utah. A transfer from Oklahoma Baptist, Becker had a two-round total of 153.
