Georgetown Secures Back-to-Back BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship Titles

BOYDS, Md. –  No. 1 seed Georgetown’s offense came alive in the second half to secure a 3-1 win over No. 3 seed UConn Sunday afternoon in the BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship Final at Maryland SoxxerPlex in Boyds, Md. With the win the Hoyas secure the BIG EAST’s automatic berth into the 2025 NCAA Championship. The NCAA Championship Selection Show is slated for Monday at 1 p.m. ET on NCAA.com.

Entering the day, Akron led the conference ranked No. 11 in the RPI, followed by No. 12 UConn, No. 16 Seton Hall, No. 17 Georgetown and No. 39 St. John’s.

Scoreless through the opening 65 minutes, it was the Hoyas (12-3-4, 6-0-2 BIG EAST) that struck first off the foot of Mateo Ponce Ocampo. Off a corner by Zach Zengue, Mitchell Baker got a touch across off his head to the awaiting foot of Ponce Ocampo.

Moments later, in the 67th minute, Ponce Ocampo locked up Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the Tournament with his second goal of the game, an unassisted strike from outside the box.

Not out yet, UConn (11-4-4, 5-2-1 BE) cut the deficit to one in the 72nd minute off a beauty by Balthazar Saunders, assisted by Austin Brummett and Max Gummesson.
