NEW YORK -- Stephon Payne of Seton Hall - who was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday - added to his list of accolades by being selected as one of five Oscar Robertson National Players of the Week by the U.S Basketball Writers Association.
Payne registered his second double-double of the week, with 18 points and a career-best 16 rebounds, in Seton Hall's win at Providence. The senior from Jacksonville, Fla. connected on 8-of-10 shots from the floor, with 14 of his 18 points coming in the second half. Five of Payne's 16 boards came on the offensive glass, resulting in six points by the 6-9 forward. He also added a steal and a blocked shot in 30 minutes of play in the win. Payne became the first Pirate since Jared Rhoden in 2022 to finish a game with at least 15 points and 15 rebounds.
It marks the third time a BIG EAST player earned weekly national honors by the USBWA. Xavier’s Tre Carroll (Dec. 9) and Butler’s Michael Ajayi (Nov. 25) were also named National Players of the Week earlier this season.
Payne was also selected to be the Met Basketball Writers Association Division I Player of the Week.
