Xavier & St. John’s, UConn & Villanova to Meet in 2025 BIG EAST Women’s Tennis Semifinals

CAYCE, S.C. –
With victories in the quarterfinals of the 2025 BIG EAST Women’s Tennis Championship presented by JEEP, UConn, St. John’s, Villanova, and Xavier advanced to the semifinals scheduled for 9 a.m. ET on Saturday at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center. Top-seeded UConn will meet No. 4 Villanova while second-seeded Xavier will face off against No. 3 St. John’s.

#2 Xavier, 4 vs. #7 Georgetown, 0
The reining BIG EAST Champions will make their eleventh consecutive BIG EAST semifinals appearance after sweeping Georgetown. The ITA #59 doubles duo of Abby Nugent and Clara Owen (XU) kicked off competition, defeating Ashley Kennedy and Katie Garofolo-Ro, 6-1, on the top court. Xavier secured the doubles point on the second and third courts, simultaneously. At No. 2 doubles, Elizabeth Pendergast and Maddie Rexroat defeated Paige Gilbert and Ellie Puzak, 6-4. At No. 3 doubles, Emily Flowers and Natalie Smitek defeated Emily Novikov and Natasha Kavarana, 6-4.

The Musketeers momentum continued into singles play when Smitek bested Carolyn Schaefer in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) on the sixth court. Nugent followed at No. 2 with a straight set result versus Kennedy (6-2, 6-2). Flowers finalized Xavier’s victory on the fourth court with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Gilbert.

#3 St. John’s, 5 vs. #6 Butler, 0
St. John’s swept past Butler, 5-0, to earn their position in the semifinals for the 12th consecutive BIG EAST tournament. In tandem play, Sandra Dzhambazov and Giulia Bizzari defeated Norah Balthazor and Lauren Cook, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles. Alexandra Nielsen and Nicoline Sartz-Lunde clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 victory over Emma Beavin and Jordan Schildcrout on the third court.

Dzhambazov went on to claim the first singles point with a win over Cook at No. 5 (6-1, 6-2). Noemi Babikova extended the Red Storm’s lead on the second court, overcoming Balthazor, 6-2, 6-1. Teammates Charlotta Buss and Alicia Gomez concluded the match with simultaneous victories at the fourth (def. Arington, 6-0, 6-2) and sixth position (def. E. Beavin, 6-1, 6-1), respectively.

#1 UConn, 4 vs. # 9 Seton Hall, 2
The tournament’s top-seed overcame Seton Hall, 4-2, to secure their spot in the semis. The Huskies earned an early advantage, taking the doubles point behind victories from Olivia Wright and Victoria Matos (No. 1 def. Niamh Campbell/ Paige Wise, 6-4) as well as Cameron Didion and Isabella Asenov (No. 3 def. Tamsin Hart/Rachel Benoualid, 6-4).

Seton Hall’s Sereda leveled the score at 1-1, defeating Wright, 6-2, 6-1 on the top court.
Fellow Pirate Arabella Moen brought Seton Hall into the lead (2-1), winning at No. 6 singles over Caroline Hinshaw (6-3, 6-0). UConn’s Petri Bere countered with a victory on the second court, defeating Wise, 6-4, 6-0. Teammate Didion extended the Huskies lead to 3-2 with a straight set win over Hart (6-4, 6-3) on the fourth court. Victoria Matos clinched at No. 3 singles, coming from behind to defeat Imogen Broker, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

#4 Villanova, 4 vs. #5 DePaul, 3
Villanova survived DePaul to advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2021. The Blue Demons won the doubles point beginning with a victory from Eleanor Nobbs and Roberta Sechi on the second court (def. Olivia Corcoran/Jenna Stevens, 6-0). Teammates Eleanor Cochran and Sasha Stula followed at No. 3 doubles, defeating Maggie Gehrig and Lauren Monti, 6-0.

Villanova volleyed, evening out the match 1-1 with a win on the sixth court from Monti over Cochran (6-2, 6-4). Nobbs, however, propelled DePaul back into the lead, taking the fourth court from Gondorova 7-6 (6), 6-0. The Wildcats answered at No. 1 singles with Sophie Edwards winning over Hannah Smith, 6-2, 7-5, and No. 3 singles behind a victory from Gehrig over Goncharov, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4, to go ahead 3-2

DePaul’s Stula once again leveled the match (3-3), defeating Corcoran at No. 2 (6-0, 4-6, 6-4), however the Wildcats would not be deterred. Villanova’s Stevens clinched the match, defeating Isabella Gibson, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2.
