UConn’s Alex Heard Earns NCAA Individual Bid

– Marquette took sole possession of the lead after the first round and pulled away to win the BIG EAST Men’s Golf Championship presented by JEEP played at the Callawassie Golf Club. The Golden Eagles finished 11 strokes ahead of runner-up Xavier and earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
 
UConn sophomore Alex Heard was the individual champion, shooting an 11-under 205 to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championship as the BIG EAST medalist. He shot a 1-under par 71 in the first round, a 6-under 66 in the second and a 4-under 68 in the final round. All three rounds were played in windy conditions.
 
Marquette won its sixth BIG EAST crown and fifth since 2015. The Golden Eagles have finished either first or second in seven of the last eight seasons. The individual Marquette leaders were Johan Widal and Patrick Adler who tied for fourth place with Creighton’s Gavin Gerch by shooting 3-under 213. The other Golden Eagle in the top 10 was Max Lyons, who tied for seventh at 2-under 214.
 
Georgetown’s Barnes Blake was the individual runner-up to UConn’s Heard. Blake finished at 5-under 211. His best round was the first when he shot a 4-under 68 followed by 71 and 72. St. John’s Peicheng Chen, last year’s medalist, jumped 13 places in the final round to finish third at 4-under 212. He shot a 6-under 66 in the final round.
 
Xavier was the team runner-up to Marquette. The Musketeers finished with a team score of 858 (-6), 11 strokes behind Marquette. It was Xavier’s best finish since a second-place showing in 2016. Creighton moved up one spot on the final day to third place with 867 (+3). Villanova and UConn tied for fourth at 872 (+8).
 
DePaul was sixth (875, +11) followed by Georgetown (876, +12), Butler (877, +13), Seton Hall (880, +16) and St. John’s (888, +24).
